The Path to Peace: Just Relations Between Nations

Address by Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba), Khalifa‐tul Masih V

at Capitol Hill, Washington D.C.

27 June 2012

Wherever injustice occurs there can never be peace – Ahmadiyya Supreme Head.

Assalamo alaikum wa rahmatullahe wa barakatohu,

All distinguished guests (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon you all)

Before proceeding, I would like to first of all take this opportunity to thank all of you for taking the time to come and listen to what I have to say.

I have been requested to speak about a subject that is extremely vast and wide ranging.

It has many different aspects and therefore it is not possible for me to cover all of them in the short time available.

And the subject that I have been asked to speak about is the establishment of world peace.

Certainly this is the most vital and pressing issue facing the world today.

However, as the time is limited, I shall only briefly give the Islamic viewpoint on the establishment of peace through just and equal relations between nations.

The truth is that peace and justice are inseparable – you cannot have one without the other.

And certainly this principle is something that all wise and intelligent people understand.

Leaving aside those people who are determined to create disorder in the world, no one can ever claim that in any society, country or even the entire world, that there can be disorder or a lack of peace, where justice and fair dealing exists.

Nevertheless, we find that in many parts of the world disorder and a lack of peace are prevalent.

And such disorder is visible both internally within countries, and externally in terms of the relations between various nations.

Such disorder and strife exists even though all governments claim to make policies that are based on justice. And all claim that the establishment of peace is their primary objective.

Yet, in general, there is little doubt that restlessness and anxiety is increasing in the world and so disorder is spreading. This clearly proves that somewhere along the line, the requirements of justice are not being fulfilled.

Therefore there is an urgent need to try and end inequality, wherever and whenever it exists.

And so as the worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I would like to make a few observations about the need for, and the ways to achieve peace based on justice.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a purely religious community.

It is our firm belief that the Messiah and Reformer who was destined to appear in this age and enlighten the world as to Islam’s true teachings has indeed arrived.

We believe that the Founder of our Community, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, was that very Promised Messiah and Reformer, and thus we have accepted him.

Based on his teachings, we act upon and propagate the real and true teachings of Islam that are based on the Holy Qur’an.

Therefore, everything that I will say in relation to establishing peace and in relation to conducting just international relations, will be based on Qur’anic teachings.

In relation to achieving world peace, all of you regularly express your opinions and indeed make great efforts.

Your creative and intelligent minds allow you to present great ideas, plans and indeed a vision of peace.

Thus this issue does not require me to speak from a worldly or political perspective, but instead my entire focus will be based on how to establish peace based on religion.

And for this purpose I shall, as I have said, present some very important guidelines based on the teachings of the Holy Qur’an.

It is important to always remember that human knowledge and intellect is not perfect, but is in fact limited.

Thus when making decisions or forming thoughts, often certain factors enter human minds, which can cloud judgement and lead to a person trying to fulfil his own rights.

Ultimately, this can lead to an unjust outcome and decision being made.

However God’s Law is perfect and so no vested interests or unfair provisions exist.

This is because God only desires for the good and betterment of His Creation and therefore His Law is based entirely on justice.

The day the people of the world come to recognise and understand this crucial point, will be the day that the foundation for true and everlasting peace will be laid.

Otherwise we continue to find that although efforts are endlessly made to establish world peace, yet they are unable to provide any worthwhile results.

After the conclusion of the First World War, the leaders of certain countries desired for good and peaceful relations between all nations in future.

Thus in an effort to achieve world peace the ‘League of Nations’ was formed.

Its principle aim was to maintain world peace and to prevent future wars from breaking out.

Unfortunately, the rules of the League and the Resolutions it passed had certain flaws and weaknesses and so they did not properly protect the rights of all peoples and all nations equally.

And so one by one countries began to withdraw from the League.

And so as a result of the inequalities that existed, long term peace could not prevail.

The efforts of the League failed and this led directly to World War II.

We are all well aware of the unparalleled destruction and devastation that ensued, where around 75 million people globally lost their lives, many of whom were innocent civilians.

That war should have been more than enough to open the eyes of the world.

It should have been a means to developing wise policies that granted all parties their due rights, based on justice and thus prove to be a means of establishing peace in the world.

The world’s governments at the time did endeavour to some extent to try and establish peace and hence the United Nations was established.

However, it soon became quite apparent, that the noble and overarching objective underpinning the United Nations, could not be fulfilled.

Indeed today, certain governments, quite openly make statements that prove its failure.

What does Islam say in relation to international relations that are based on justice, and so a means of establishing peace?

In chapter 49, verse 14 of the Holy Qur’an, God Almighty has made it clear that whilst our nationalities or ethnic backgrounds act as a means of identity, they do not entitle or validate any form of superiority of any kind.

The Qur’an thus makes clear that all people are born equal.

Furthermore, in the final sermon ever delivered by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) he instructed all Muslims to always remember that an Arab is not superior to a non-Arab and nor is a non-Arab superior to an Arab.

And he taught that a white person is not superior to a black person and nor is a black person superior to a white person.

Thus, it is a clear teaching of Islam that the people of all nationalities and all races are equal.

And it is also made clear that all people should be granted equal rights without any discrimination or prejudice.

This is the key and golden principle that lays the foundation for harmony between different groups and nations and for the establishment of peace.

However today we find that there is division and separation between powerful and weaker nations.

For example, in the United Nations we find that there is a distinction made between certain countries.

Thus in the Security Council there are some permanent members and some non-permanent members.

This division has proved to be an internal source of anxiety and frustration and thus we regularly hear reports of certain countries protesting against this inequality.

Islam teaches absolute justice and equality in all matters and so we find another very crucial guideline in chapter 5, verse 3 of the Holy Qur’an.

In this verse it states that to fully comply with the requirements of justice, it is necessary to treat even those people, who go beyond all limits in their hatred and enmity, with fairness and equity.

And the Qur’an teaches that wherever and whoever counsels you towards goodness and virtue, you should accept it.

And wherever and whoever counsels you towards sinful or unjust behaviour, you should reject it.

A question that naturally arises is that what is the standard of justice required by Islam?

In chapter 4, verse 136, the Holy Qur’an states that even if you have to testify against yourself or your parents or your most loved ones, then you must do so in order to uphold justice and to uphold the truth.

Powerful and rich countries should not usurp the rights of the poor and weaker countries, in an effort to preserve their own rights, and nor should they deal with the poorer nations in an unjust fashion.

On the other hand, the poor and weaker nations should not seek to inflict harm on the powerful or wealthy nations, whenever the opportunity arises.

Instead, both sides should endeavour to fully abide by the principles of justice and indeed this is a matter of crucial importance in maintaining peaceful relations between countries.

Another requirement for peace between nations based on justice is given in chapter 15, verse 89 of the Holy Qur’an where it states that no party should ever look enviously at the resources and wealth of others.

And similarly no country should seek to unjustly appropriate or take over the resources of another country on the false pretext of trying to assist or support them.

Thus on the basis of providing technical expertise, governments should not take advantage of other nations, by making unjust trade deals or contracts.

And similarly, on the basis of providing expertise or assistance, governments should not try to take control of the natural resources or assets of the developing nations.

Where less educated people or governments need to be taught how to properly utilise their natural resources, then this should be done.

Nations and governments should always seek to serve and help those less fortunate.

However such service should not be rendered with an aim of achieving national or political benefits or as a means to fulfil vested interests.

We find that in the past six or seven decades the United Nations has launched many programmes or foundations aiming to help the poor countries to progress.

Towards this effort they have explored the natural resources of the developing nations.

However despite these efforts, none of the poorer countries have reached the stage or level of the developed nations.

One reason for this is certainly wide-ranging corruption by many of the governments of those poor nations.

With regret though, I must say that as a means to further their own interests, the developed nations have continued to deal with such governments.

Trade deals, international aid and business contracts have continued to be processed.

And as a result, the frustrations and restlessness of the poor and deprived segments of society have continued to increase and this has led to rebellion and internal disorder within those countries.

The poor people of the developing countries have become so frustrated that they have turned against not only their own leaders but also the Western powers as well.

This has played into the hands of the extremist groups, who have taken advantage of the frustrations, and so have been able to encourage such people towards joining their groups and supporting their hate filled ideology.

And the ultimate result of this has been that the peace of the world has been destroyed.

Islam has drawn our attention to the means for peace:

It requires absolute justice.

It requires truthful testimony to always be given.

It requires that our glances are not cast enviously in the direction of the wealth of other.

And it requires that the developed nations, put aside their own vested interests, and instead help and serve the less developed and poorer nations with a truly selfless attitude and spirit.

If all of these factors are observed then true peace will be established.

Remember, where injustice occurs there can never be peace.

And so if a country transgresses all limits and attacks another country and seeks to unjustly take control of its resources, then other countries should certainly take measures to stop such cruelty.

But they should always act with justice when doing so.

The circumstances for taking action, based on Islamic teachings, are detailed in chapter 49, verse 10 of the Qur’an.

It teaches that where two nations are in dispute and this leads to war, then other governments should strongly counsel them towards dialogue and diplomacy so that they can come to an agreement and reconciliation on the basis of a negotiated settlement.

However if one of the parties does not accept the terms of agreement and wages war, then other countries should unite together and fight to stop that aggressor.

When the aggressive nation is defeated and he agrees to mutual negotiation, then all parties should work towards an agreement which leads to long-standing peace and reconciliation.

Harsh and unjust conditions should not be enforced that lead to the hands of any nation being tied, because in the long term that will lead to restlessness which will ferment and spread.

And the result of such restlessness will be further disorder.

In circumstances where a third-party government seeks to bring about reconciliation between two parties, then it should act with sincerity and total impartiality.

And this impartiality should remain even if one of the parties speaks against it and so the third party should display no anger in such circumstances and should seek no revenge or act in an unfair manner.

All parties should be afforded their due rights.

Thus for the requirements of justice to be fulfilled, it is essential that the countries who are negotiating a settlement, should themselves not seek to fulfil their own personal interests or to try and derive benefit unduly from either country.

They should not interfere unjustly or pressure either of the parties unfairly.

The natural resources of any country should not be taken advantage of.

Unnecessary and unfair restrictions should not be placed upon such countries.

Because this is neither just and nor can it ever prove to be a source of improving relations between countries.

Due to time constraints, I have mentioned these points only very briefly.

In short, if we desire peace to be established in the world, then we must leave aside our personal and national interests for the greater good and instead we must establish mutual relations that are based entirely on justice.

Otherwise, as all of you are also aware, that due to the many alliances and blocs that exist, it is not unlikely that disorder will continue to increase in the world, which will ultimately lead to huge destruction.

The effects of such devastation and warfare will surely last for many generations.

And so the United States, as the world’s largest power, should play its role in acting with true justice and with such good intentions as I have described.

If it does so then the world will always remember with great admiration your great efforts.

It is my prayer that this hope becomes a reality.

Thank you very much.

Ontario’s Premier Hosts Reception in Honour of Head of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat

Reception held day before Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad returned to London

On 16 July 2012, a special reception in honour of the World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, was held at the Paramount Banquet Centre in Woodbridge, Ontario. The event was hosted by the Premier of Ontario, Hon. Dalton McGuinty and the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration for Ontario, Hon. Charles Sousa.

The event began at 11.30am with a welcome address by Ontario’s Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Charles Sousa. Thereafter, the Premier of Ontario, Dalton McGuinty spoke about his admiration for the humanitarian efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Canada.

Premier Dalton McGuinty also spoke his pleasure at receiving Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad. He said:

“To His Holiness, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad – welcome to Ontario. It was an honour to have met in 2008. We are all grateful for your presence once again. And for your dedication to promoting the values that make your community so important to our province… We are fortunate to have a strong Ahmadiyya Muslim Community that is inspired by the leadership of His Holiness to promote peace, justice, equality, respect and understanding for all humanity.”

After his remarks, the Premier invited Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad to address the audience. His Holiness used his address to speak of the importance of always upholding the truth in all matters. He said that honesty was the key to developing trust which would in turn lead to peace and justice.

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad began his address by thanking Premier Dalton McGuinty for hosting the event. His Holiness said that even though he had a very busy schedule in Canada, he deemed it essential to attend the reception.

His Holiness said:

“I could not reject this hand of friendship as it would have been a sign of huge indecency and ungratefulness… On the one hand, we Ahmadi Muslims claim that we are the ones who display the highest moral standards and so how could it be that on the other we did not respond to friendship with friendship? How could it be that we did not respond to love with love?”

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad went on to speak about the vast importance of moral values and in particular the need to always follow a path of honesty.

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“A person who departs from honesty does not have complete faith because it proves that his faith lies not with God but elsewhere. It is only through the right word that confidence and trust can develop. And it is trust that is a means for guaranteeing peace. If this golden principle is followed at every level then a spirit of peace and harmony will spread throughout all of society, from our domestic family units, to the wider world and indeed in terms of the relations between nations.”

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said that the basis for all laws and agreements ought to be honesty, whereby all parties sought to serve the interests of mutual benefit and equity, rather than to pursue selfish interests. He said that fair dealing would instil confidence and thus would remove the fears and anxieties of the general public.

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad concluded by stating that for true world peace to develop it was also essential that the poor and deprived countries were helped by the developed nations. He said that all forms of aid ought to be given with sincerity, rather than in an effort to fulfil vested interests.

His Holiness said:

“A true spirit of sacrifice is required for a peaceful society to develop. Thus, it should not be that you help the poor and needy only out of what extra resources you have, but rather you should be willing to inflict hardship on yourself in an effort to help your brothers and sisters and fulfil their rights.”

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued:

“Do not only help those countries, which according to your own treaties and deals, you are obliged to help, so that you can acquire certain benefits for yourself in return. But instead you should search for those who are truly deprived and from whom you can seek no personal benefit or fulfil any vested interest. Fulfil the rights of the needy, as that is the means to develop real trust and confidence. Most importantly it removes anxieties and frustrations and as a result peace in society is developed.”

After the conclusion of the formal proceedings lunch was served to all of the guests, before a number of non-Ahmadi guests had the opportunity to meet with Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad.

World Muslim Leader calls for vigilance against all forms of extremism

On 11 July 2012, the World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Fifth Khalifa, officially inaugurated the ‘Tahir Hall’, a three-storey complex built by the Jamaat on land adjacent to the Baitul Islam Mosque in Peace Village. More than 550 people attended the event including more than 150 non-Ahmadi guests.

The event began as Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad unveiled a plaque to officially mark the occasion. This was followed by a welcome address by Lal Khan Malik, the President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Canada and the remarks of various guest dignitaries.

The highlight of the evening was the keynote address given by Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad in which he expressed his great admiration for Canada and its spirit of openness and tolerance. He also used his address to warn about the dangers of extremism penetrating Western society.

In his welcome address, Lal Khan Malik, gave a brief history of the Tahir Hall project. He informed that the building was multipurpose and would be used to educate, to encourage health and fitness and also for administrative purposes. He stated that all of the money for the project had been raised internally by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat.

The audience was also informed that the building had been named after Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, the Fourth Khalifa, who led the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat from 1982 until his demise in April 2003.

Minister Julian Fantino MP said he brought greetings from Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He added:

“The inauguration of Tahir Hall represents yet another milestone resulting from your outstanding commitment to strengthening our community. This auspicious occasion is highlighted by the presence of His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Community.”

The interim leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Bob Rae MP, said:

“It is a great pleasure and privilege to attend the event and to have Hadhrat Mirza Masroor with us in Canada. We celebrate the commitment of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat towards mutual understanding, love and religious tolerance. We are very proud of our relationship with the Community and we will always stand up for its members who are denied their rights.”

Kyle Seeback MP said that the Jamaat was a ‘model and beacon for all Canadians’. Judy Sgro MP said it was a ‘truly special day’. She added that the building was a source of pride for all.

Dr. Kirsty Duncan MP said that the Tahir Hall was ‘a gift to the community and to Canada’.She added that she had attended the Annual Convention a few days earlier and had been‘truly inspired by His Holiness, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad’.

Others to take the stage and congratulate the Jamaat included Linda Jeffrey MPP, Eric Joliffe, Chief of York Regional Police, Councillor Marilyn Iafrate and Doug White, the Mayor of Bradford.

The Mayor of Vaughan, Maurizio Bevilacqua, introduced Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad and invited him to deliver the keynote address.

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad used his address to speak about the high levels of tolerance manifest by the Canadian people.

His Holiness said:

“Canada is a vast country, spread far and wide and in the same way the levels of tolerance and mutual respect displayed by the Canadian people is vast and truly exemplary. It was in view of such a harmonious society that my predecessor, Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad(ra), the fourth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Community, stated in admiration of Canada, that he wished that ‘the whole world becomes Canada and Canada becomes the whole world’.”

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued by stating that he had always been afforded a kind welcome whenever he had visited Canada.

His Holiness said:

“I recall that when I first came to Canada in 2004, upon arriving at the airport there were many politicians and people associated with the Government who were present to welcome me to the country. When I saw this, I was extremely pleased but also quite astonished. It felt as though I had come back to my own country and it was my own brothers and sisters who were there to greet me.”

The Khalifa concluded by speaking about the perils of all forms of extremism.

He said that extremists were taking advantage of liberal immigration laws to enter certain countries and were thus there was a real threat that their hate-filled ideologies would penetrate Western countries such as Canada. Thus he urged the Government and Authorities to take serious notice of this risk.

His Holiness said:

“For “the entire world to become Canada” we must keep a vigilant eye on all forms of extremism and extremists. A close eye must be kept on those who try to enter the country on the pretext of business or investment… No doubt the eyes and glances of those who hold extremist ideologies are cast upon this country. It is not necessary that they will conduct a large scale terrorist attack, but instead they may take a more subtle approach, whereby they will seek to gradually spread their hate-filled ideologies upon entering the country.

Uprising in the Middle East and a new beginning!

Source:  The Malta Independent On Sunday: Sunday, 1 July 2012       BY: Laiq Ahmed Atif, President Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta

The situation in some of the Middle East and African countries grows worse day by day. Since the problems are increasing in some countries and some others have not settled down yet, people are being seriously affected. Therefore it is only natural to have grave concerns about them. Although, at present, the entire world feels deep pain, there is an extremely restless feeling among the people.

The uprisings that started last year have shaken the entire Middle East and many African Arab countries to the core. In these demonstrations one thing was very clearly evident – that the leaders, who are or were, ruling these countries for decades, have not given proper attention to the problems of their people; instead monarchs have used the opportunities to divert people’s attention and rob their own national wealth and tighten their grip on the people.

These problems first came to a head in Tunisia, moved to Egypt and then to Libya, Bahrain, Yemen and indeed Syria. As human beings, we are grieved about the current situation in these countries, and the havoc and the difficulties that are been created for the ordinary men and women in the street and their children, are heart rending. We see the news and get to know what is happening there and our hearts bleed for these innocent people. And we pray that their suffering come to an end and peace restored.

The rulers of these countries have been there for decades, and also their families have been closely associated with their rule of power; they all ignored the rights of their people and have ignored the sufferings of their nations. They have not ruled their countries with justice, they have not thought about what is best for their citizens, and how wealth should be distributed among those citizens and how to provide for their welfare. They did not utilize the national talent; they did not provide them with a standard education, jobs and medical facilities. They had their own interests at heart, which they tried to fulfil during their long years in power.

And when people came out on the streets, the rulers enforced all the army, police and security personals, and the resources of the countries for attacking and killing its own citizens. And thus those lands witnessed shedding of human blood – human blood that is sacred.

Since these uprisings started, I have felt great pain as many other lovers of humanity do, and wrote on these issues. I once again feel it is my moral duty as we experience the greatest sorrow on the situation in this contemporary world, to show my absolute sincerity at this time of great pain and to write some sincere words in the hope that they may be a guideline for the Arab world to get rid of this massacre.

I believe that every ruler must keep one thing in his mind – that he is answerable for whatever he does. And a true leader of a nation is the one who serves the nation, the one who is the leader of the people, who is close to their needs and feels their sufferings and is always ready to listen to their problems and tries to solve them.

I believe that equality, fair and equal treatment for everyone across the board, and absolute justice – equally enforced from top to bottom, for the leaders and for the ordinary people, for the kings and for the beggars; no one should be superior or excluded from justice, are the key points and solid principles for these countries to move forward. I think all the problems have cropped up in these countries because these basic principles were neglected.

Thus, the rulers and kings of these countries should do justice to the offices they hold. And the people too should realize their responsibility and not allow their countries to fall into the hands of extremists or fundamentalists. And the rulers should not cause disorder in the land, and not be unjust, not to ignore the rights of the people, and not to allow the gap between the rich and poor to increase so much that it causes unease and paves the way for rebellion. The only path is that of righteousness and absolute justice and if both the people and rulers adhere to it, they will all prosper.

It is my fervent prayer, and that is the greatest weapon I believe, that God makes the leaders recognise their responsibilities and obligations; they should fulfil their duties with righteousness and establish absolute justice in their countries. And may peace prevail, and may we see very soon, the beginning of a new era, an era of justice, peace and prosperity. Amen

Khalifa of Islam on U.S. Tour

At a time in history when there is a visible lack of central leadership among Muslims and most Muslim countries are in chaos faced with war, political unrest and chaos, I feel blessed and proud to be part of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community that is unified under guidance of one individual or Khalifa.

The Khalifa (Caliph) of Islam, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad, has been on a tour of United States for the past few days. I am pretty certain that most Americans are unaware of his existence or the fact that he has tens of millions of followers in around 200 countries. Our community bears the motto, “Love for all, Hatred for None” and our leader urges us to serve mankind in whatever way possible, live in peace and never take law into our own hands even when faced with persecution in many parts of the world.

Only recently he sent letters to the Prime Ministers of Israel, Iran and President Obama so that they could resolve conflict and avoid third World War at all cost.

‘Khilafat’ is nothing new to Islam. The word ‘Khilafat’ means succession and we believe that the Khalifa is a successor of a Prophet of God whose goal is to carry to completion the tasks of reformation and moral training seeded by the Prophet of Islam.

Historically speaking, there have been four successors/’Khulfa’ after the demise of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This institution was re-established after the death of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community whom we believe to be the promised Messiah of the latter days.

His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad is the fifth Khalifa of our community and has been serving the community since 2003. He resides in United Kingdom with his family, which serves as the community’s International headquarter.

This is his second visit to the U.S with the main objective being the meeting with community members spread in 71 Chapters all over the country and also to convey the message of peace to the people and government of United States. At an event in Washington D.C on June 27th, he is scheduled to deliver a keynote address “The Path to Peace: Just Relations Between Nations.”  Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Republican Congressman Frank Wolf, Congressman Keith Ellison and Senator John Kerry will attend the event along with other dignitaries.

The governor of Illinois welcomed His Holiness with a welcome letter on his arrival in Chicago from London. He then went to Zion because of its historic nature for our community. This town was established by John Alexander Dowie, to whom the Promised Messiah issued a challenge of a prayer duel in 1902 upon his repeated insults and false allegations about the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Dowie never responded but died a sad and lonely death as prophesied by our community founder. This led to the memorable headline in the ‘Sunday Herald of Boston’ on 23 June 1907:

Mirza Ghulam Ahmad is Great – The Messiah foretold pathetic end of Dowie.”

After visiting the first Ahmadi Mosque in Chicago, as of June 22, His holiness has arrived at Bait-ur-Rahman mosque in Maryland where about 2000 community members greeted him.

This mosque serves as our community’s National Headquarter in the U.S.

In the next few days he will be meeting more community members and leaders in addition to attending our annual convention in Harrisburg, Pa., from June 29 to July 1,  which is expected to draw more than 10,000 followers from all over the U.S and the world.

Usually community members travel to U.K to see him in person, so his US visit brings a great opportunity for us to catch a glimpse and to be in his presence.

That is why many families, including my own, from our Georgia chapter are traveling to Harrisburg to attend the convention.

Laiq Ahmed Atif presents the donation to Fr Martin Micallef.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Malta has donated foodstuffs and fruit to Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi.

Ahmadiyya Malta president Laiq Ahmed Atif presented the donation to home director Fr Martin Micallef.

Mr Atif said people with disabilities deserve the utmost respect and dignity. It is important that we focus more on the ‘ability’ rather than on the ‘disability’.

Fr Martin thanked Mr Atif. He said this was not the first time the community had shown its support.

Il-President tal-Komunità Aħmadija Musulmana ta’ Malta, Laiq Ahmed Atif, ippreżenta oġġetti ta’ ikel u frott lil Fr Martin Micallef, Direttur tad-Dar tal-Providenza.

F’kelmtejn li għamel, is-Sur Atif qal li kien il-pjaċir tiegħu li f’isem il-Komunità tiegħu jgħin, iservi u jieħu sehem fil-kawża ġusta u nobbli li toffri d-Dar lir-residenti tagħha. Huwa żied jgħid li huma jemmnu fid-dinjità umana li ma għandha tħalli lil ħadd jinqata’ mill-bqija daqskemm jemmnu fl-ugwaljanza u fl-imħabba tal-umanità fejn kull persuna hija meqjusa bħala persuna umana.

Is-Sur Atif tenna li l-persuni b’diżabilità mhumiex inqas mill-oħrajn. Huma wkoll bnedmin u jistħoqqilhom kull rispett u dinjità. Huwa temm jgħid li hu importanti li niffokaw aktar fuq l-“abilità” milli fuq id-“diżabilità” biex kulħadd jingħata ċans li jesprimi l-abilità tiegħu.

Effective Integration

Credit: The Times Logo / Tuesday, June 19, 2012 by:  Laiq Ahmed Atif

The world has emerged as a global village and the means of communication and transportation have made it such a reality of the contemporary times that one cannot deny. Today, people frequently and easily travel from one place to the other and many are settling in different countries.

… responsibility is the basis of and the key to effective integration
– Laiq Ahmed Atif

Migration is a phenomenon, and not only human beings but also other creatures, such as birds, go from one place to another due to certain circumstances.

Bird migration is also the regular seasonal journey undertaken by many species. Bird movements are mostly motivated by a search for food and changes in the weather. Human activities have also threatened many migratory bird species and many birds migrate due to hunting and killing threats.

Some birds fly short distances but others go further. About 1,800 of the world’s 10,000 bird species are long-distance migrants. According to the National Geographic, the Sooty shearwaters fly over 64,000 kilometres a year – from New Zealand to the North Pacific Ocean – every summer in search of food, the longest migration of birds ever recorded.

I say this to sustain my point that migration has become an undeniable reality and that creatures travel from one place to the other for certain reasons.

Human migration is no different. Human beings also migrate in search of a good future, to settle down or to improve their businesses. Some migrate to escape hardships in their countries, to escape tyrannical rulers or to run away from religious persecution, just to name a few reasons.

Last month, I had the opportunity to attend a very interesting and informative networking conference organised by SOS Malta, which encouraged me to write about integration.

The subject of integration is not only related to illegal immigrants but it also applies to those living in a foreign country legally. I shall focus on the legal migrants.

In September 2006, the 132 member states that participated in the UN General Assembly reaffirmed that migration could make a positive contribution to development in countries of origin and in countries of destination. They emphasised the need to respect the fundamental rights of the migrants and also recognised the importance of strengthening international cooperation.

I believe that integration is not only possible but is highly essential for the betterment and progress of a society, a country and the world at large. But to me it is a two-way process and all the stakeholders need to work on two levels: rights and responsibilities.

On many occasions we speak about rights but ignore the more important requirement for better and effective integration: responsibilities. Without shouldering responsibilities, the protection of rights cannot be guaranteed and one cannot even dream of ensuring effective integration because responsibility is the basis of and the key to effective integration.

Migrants have a right to have their human dignity respected. They should be treated in a humane and respectful manner with equity and justice. Their fundamental human rights should be honoured and their culture, traditions and religion should also be recognised and respected.

As far as the responsibilities of the migrants go, they must make sure that they remain fully loyal and faithful to the country they have migrated to. They should always abide by the laws of the land. The culture, traditions, customs and religion of the host country should likewise be respected.

The migrants should try to make a contribution towards the progress and betterment of the country where they settle. They should also serve society and the country through their abilities, capabilities and skills. And they must be willing to integrate and to adopt all of the good things the country has to offer.

Moreover, a bond of love and mutual respect of each other’s human dignity should remain the main focus and aim of both the migrants and the society welcoming them.

As we say in Maltese, both sides must work id f’id (closely) to strengthen the economy and ensure growth for the country. And, rather than becoming a burden on the society and the economy of the adoptive country, migrants should offer their support and should step forward to contribute. I think that if both the host society and the migrants work in this spirit the outcome would be positive and would contribute a lot to the good of the country.

This article is not meant to promote migration but, rather, to highlight the points and aspects that can be helpful for the better integration of migrants and that can be useful for the progress of a country.

Kofi Anna very nicely summed up the human values and the dignity that we all share when he said: “We may have different religions, different languages, different coloured skin, but we all belong to one human race. We all share the same basic values”.

I believe that better integration is not an option but is indeed crucial and highly essential and, so, must be given due importance. I believe that freedom of faith and expression also contribute toward integration. Jews should be able to practise their religion freely. Christians should also be able to practise their religion freely and so also should Muslims.

Where the interests of the country are at stake, then all citizens should work together for the betterment of the nation.

I believe that for integration to be successful, it is necessary to believe that the country one is living in is one’s own and so strive so that it would succeed.

One’s relationship should be with the country and not just with individuals. One must work and desire the best for the country at large. This is true and effective integration.

Let’s make Malta a smoke-free island on earth!

By: Laiq Ahmed Atif Credit: The Malta Independent Date: 13 June 2012

The advancement of medical sciences has made the lives of people more safe and secure. Different new treatments have been invented for curing human illnesses and diseases. On the other hand, it is also a reality that certain diseases and health-related problems are also increasing rapidly. The question arises: Why?

Some of the main causes concerning health problems are smoking, alcoholism and the use of drugs. Smoking is very common and the only legal drug – also easily available and within the reach of everyone. Tobacco is one of the causes of severe and fatal diseases such as cancer, high blood pressure, asthma, skin problems, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and heart attack.

According to the World Health Organisation, smoking kills more people than any disease in the world. Smoking takes the lives of millions of people around the world every year. Tobacco use is the second cause of death globally (after hypertension) and is currently responsible for killing one in 10 adults worldwide. And around 650,000 people die of smoking-related causes in Europe every year, a figure which is on the increase at a rapid speed. Each day, nearly 2,800 people, including kids, start smoking on a daily basis. About two billion people smoke all around the world.

If we analyse the above statistics, it is very easy to find that most of the criminals and drug addicted people started from little and minor things. It should not come as any surprise that one common view is that many young boys and girls are influenced by their peers to start smoking, and then they may be led towards other addictive drugs, and eventually, these kids may become agents or drug dealers themselves. Parents have the double duty to shoulder the responsibility – if they smoke, their children are more likely to start smoking. Parents who smoke may tell their children the harms the cigarettes cause, however they lose their argument on moral grounds as they are the role model for their children. When they smoke themselves, children may not get the strong message, because ‘actions speak louder than words’. Parents should remain cautioned to be watchful over their children, and lead by examples.

Smoking does not only harm human health, but it is also a waste of money – a heavy burden on the economy and monthly budget of every family. And in the time of economical crises that are looming on the world economy, the use of tobacco is making it worse and the families are suffering as it is becoming hard for them to meet their daily ends.

Smoking is also one of the causes of increasing poverty. According to statistics, 28.8% of adults who smoke live below the poverty level and 20.3% of adults who smoke live at or above the poverty level. And students who smoke also risk their studies because they spend a considerable amount on buying cigarettes.

Sometimes cigarettes can become the cause of big tragedies because some people throw their cigarette-ends after smoking and if they do not extinguish them properly, these cigarette-ends may set the place on fire which may create problems.

With all this information readily available, shared and discussed, I fail to understand why people continue to smoke

According to various smoking-related studies, people normally smoke for one of the following reasons: They are used to it and can’t stop, to feel energised and alert, it helps them relax and cope with difficult situations, because of emotional and physical abuse, trauma, pain, stress, boredom, curiosity, wanting to experiment with something new, addiction and the easy availability of cigarettes. Many people claim that smoking keeps them thin, but the truth is that smoking reduces the sense of taste, and they simply eat less as they don’t find the food tasty. The glamorous tobacco advertising campaign also has a big influence on people who smoke.

Whilst the above explanations may all be valid, the outcome of smoking is highly harmful, not only individually but also at the family and social level.

Smoking is the largest cause of preventable death in the world. Recent studies have found that smokers can undermine the health of non-smokers in some environments. A study shows that even the smell of cigarette smoke is toxic, and smoking people transfer heavy health risks to others around them. And in the case of the minors, it affects them very badly.

Considering the importance of this issue, every year on 31 May, the WHO celebrates World No Tobacco Day, highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocating for effective policies to reduce consumption. The World Health Assembly created World No Tobacco Day in 1987 to draw global attention to the tobacco epidemic and its lethal effects.

The day provides a great opportunity to remind people of the consequences of tobacco use, to emphasise specific messages to control the usage of tobacco and to promote awareness in the public about the gravity of smoking.

After presenting some figures and details about smoking, may I repeat my question: Why do people smoke? Are you ready to quit this habit? Are you ready to make your wonderful homeland a smoke-free country? Let’s join hands to make Malta the first smoke-free country on the planet earth, for ourselves, for our children and for the sake of the entire nation and human race.

Letter to President of the United States of America

President Barack Obama
President of the United States of America
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington D.C.

8 March 2012

Dear Mr President,

In light of the perturbing state of affairs developing in the world, I felt that it was necessary for me to write to you, as you are the President of the United States of America, a country which is a world superpower, and thus you hold the authority to make decisions which will affect the future of your nation and the world at large.

There is currently great agitation and restlessness in the world. Small-scale wars have broken out in certain areas. Unfortunately, the superpowers have not been as successful as was anticipated in their efforts to establish peace in these conflict-hit regions. Globally, we find that almost every country is engaged in activities to either support, or oppose other countries; however, the requirements of justice are not being fulfilled.  It is with regret that if we now observe the current circumstances of the world, we find that the foundation for another world war has already been laid. As so many countries, both large and small, have nuclear weapons, grudges and hostilities are increasing between nations. In such a predicament, the Third World War looms almost certainly before us. Such a war would surely involve atomic warfare; and therefore, we are witnessing the world head towards a terrifying destruction. If a path of equity and justice had been followed after the Second World War, we would not be witnessing the current state of the world today whereby it has become engulfed in the flames of war once again.

As we are all aware, the main causes that led to the Second World War were the failure of League of Nations and the economic crisis, which began in 1932. Today, leading economists state that there are numerous parallels between the current economic crisis and that of 1932. We observe that political and economic problems have once again led to wars between smaller nations, and to internal discord and discontentment becoming rife within these countries. This will ultimately result in certain powers emerging to the helm of government, who will lead us to a world war. If in the smaller countries conflicts cannot be resolved through politics or diplomacy, it will lead to new blocs and groupings to form in the world. This will be the precursor for the outbreak of a Third World War. Hence, I believe that now, rather than focusing on the progress of the world, it is more important and indeed essential, that we urgently increase our efforts to save the world from this destruction. There is an urgent need for mankind to recognise its One God, Who is our Creator, as this is the only guarantor for the survival of humanity; otherwise, the world will continue to rapidly head towards self-destruction.

My request to you, and indeed to all world leaders, is that instead of using force to suppress other nations, use diplomacy, dialogue and wisdom. The major powers of the world, such as the United States, should play their role towards establishing peace. They should not use the acts of smaller countries as a pretext to disturb world harmony. Currently, nuclear arms are not only possessed by the United States and other major powers; rather, even relatively smaller countries now possess such weapons of mass destruction, where those who are in power are often trigger-happy leaders who act without thought or consideration. Thus, it is my humble request to you to strive to your utmost to prevent the major and minor powers from erupting into a Third World War. There should be no doubt in our minds that if we fail in this task then the effects and aftermath of such a war will not be limited to only the poor countries of Asia, Europe and the Americas; rather, our future generations will have to bear the horrific consequences of our actions and children everywhere in the world will be born disabled or deformed. They will never forgive their elders who led the world to a global catastrophe. Instead of being concerned for only our vested interests, we should consider our coming generations and strive to create a brighter future for them. May God the Exalted enable you, and all world leaders, to comprehend this message.

Yours Sincerely,

MIRZA MASROOR AHMAD

Letter to President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

His Excellency
President of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Tehran

7 March 2012

Dear Mr President,

Assalamo Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahe Wa Barakatohu,

In light of the perilous state of affairs emerging in the world, I felt that it was essential for me to write to you, as you are the President of Iran, and thus you hold the authority to make decisions which will affect the future of your nation and the world at large. There is currently great agitation and restlessness in the world. In some areas small-scale wars have broken out, while in other places the superpowers act on the pretext of trying to bring about peace. Each country is engaged in activities to either help or oppose other countries, but the requirements of justice are not being fulfilled.  It is with regret that if we now observe the current circumstances of the world, we find that the foundation for another world war has already been laid. As so many countries, both large and small, have nuclear weapons, grudges and hostilities are increasing. In such a predicament, the Third World War looms almost certainly before us. As you are aware, the availability of nuclear weapons will mean that a Third World War will be an atomic war. Its ultimate result will be catastrophic, and the long term effects of such warfare could lead to future generations being born disabled or deformed.

It is my belief that as followers of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(pbuh), who was sent to establish peace in the world, and who was the Rahmatullil  Aalameen – the Mercy to all of Mankind –we do not and cannot desire for the world to suffer such a fate. This is why my request to you is that as Iran is also a significant power in the world, it should play its role to prevent a Third World War. It is undeniably true that the major powers act with double standards. Their injustices have caused restlessness and disorder to spread all across the world. However, we cannot ignore the fact that some Muslim groups act inappropriately, and contrary to the teachings of Islam. Major world powers have used this as a pretext to fulfil their vested interests by taking advantage of the poor Muslim countries. Thus, I request you once again, that you should focus all of your efforts and energies towards saving the world from a Third World War. The Holy Qur’an teaches Muslims that enmity against any nation should not hinder them from acting in a just manner. In Surah Al Mai’dah, Allah the Exalted instructs us:

“And let not the enmity of a people, that they hindered you from the Sacred Mosque, incite you to transgress. And help one another in righteousness and piety; but help not one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah; surely, Allah is severe in punishment.” (Ch.5:V.3)

Similarly, in the same chapter of the Holy Qur’an we find the following commandment to Muslims:

“O ye who believe! Be steadfast in the cause of Allah, bearing witness in equity; and let not a people’s enmity incite you to act otherwise than with justice. Be always just, that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah. Surely, Allah is aware of what you do.”(Ch.5:V.9)

Hence, you should not oppose another nation merely out of enmity and hatred. I admit that Israel exceeds beyond its limits, and has its eyes cast glance upon Iran. Indeed, if any country transgresses against your country, naturally you have the right to defend yourself. However, as far as possible disputes should be resolved through diplomacy and negotiations. This is my humble request to you, that rather than using force, use dialogue to try and resolve conflicts. The reason why I make this request is because I am the follower of that Chosen Person of God who came in this era as the True Servant of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(pbuh), and who claimed to be the Promised Messiah and Imam Mahdi. His mission was to bring mankind closer to God and to establish the rights of people in the manner our Master and Guide, the Rahmatullil Aalameen –the Mercy to all of Mankind – the Holy Prophet(pbuh)demonstrated to us. May Allah the Exalted enable the Muslim Ummah to understand this beautiful teaching.

Wassalam,

Yours Sincerely,

Bridging Cultures – Laiq Ahmed Atif

Laiq Ahmed Atif practises what he preaches – Love for All, Hatred for None.

“On my flight to Malta from Germany, I prayed a lot – because Malta was a completely new country for me, I prayed that God gives me courage and wisdom to get to know the Maltese people,” says Laiq Ahmed Atif, 30, from Pakistan.

“As soon as I was out of Malta International Airport, I felt comfortable – I knew that Malta would be my second home.”

Atif has been in Malta for four years and is the president of an organisation called Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta. He is married to Bushra and they have two children – a boy and a girl.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta, with headquarters in the UK, offers solidarity to all peoples from all cultures and religions. The organisation is present in almost 200 countries and has over 160 million members worldwide.

“There are a lot of branches in Islam. In Ahmadiyya, we believe that the Messiah and Mahdi (guide), who according to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would come to reform Islam, has already come.”

The motto of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta is ‘Love for all, hatred for none’.

“When we help people, we help human beings – we don’t look at race, religion or culture,” says Atif. Atif has worked hard to integrate.

“The Maltese people have a kind heart and that helped me integrate fast,” he says. Atif has also learned Maltese. “I wanted to learn the language so that I can act as a bridge for cultural diversity and religious harmony in Malta,” he says.

“I remember how, when Atif first came to Malta, he would read all the papers and watch the news so that he could understand the Maltese culture,” says Justin Schembri, who teaches Atif Maltese. “He wanted to learn about the Maltese culture before he actually started participating.

“When I met Atif, there was a connection between us – we were not just teacher and student, but we also became friends.

“Atif managed to integrate so well in Malta because he is a very friendly and respectful man – he seeks friendship with everyone,” Justin says.

“Integration is very important, especially in our globalised world” says Atif. “We cannot be isolated from others, and we must respect diversity – diversity is what makes the world beautiful.

“As a Muslim, it is my responsibility to love Malta as the country where I live. I do not want to be a burden on this country – rather, I want to be part of it.”

This interview was included in the publication InterAct – A Portrait of Third-Country Nationals in Malta, published as part of the Media InterAct project (IF 2010 02) and distributed with The Times. They are based on the TV programme Minn Lenti Interkulturali, broadcast on Education22/TVM2 and TVM between January and March, 2012 and on TVM between April and June, 2012. The project is co-financed through the European Fund for the Integration of Third-Country Nationals. The project is led by SOS Malta, in partnership with the Public Broadcasting Services and the Institute of Maltese Journalists.

Integration

Laiq Ahmed Atif, president Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta was also among the panel who addressed the Press Conference called by SOS Malta, to launch a project to mainstream the integration and diversity of third-country nationals through the media. Laiq Ahmed Atif said that the true integration is not only possible but highly essential for the progress and betterment of Malta, he also highlighted some points about the rights and obligations for the effective integration.

By: Laiq Ahmed Atif, President Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta

As we all know, that the world has emerged as a glabal viallage, an undeniable realty. Today people frequently travell to different places, and are settling in different countries. Migration is also a phenomenon, not only human beings, but also the other creatures such as birds, migrate from one place to other, due to certain circumstances.

Some migrate for having good future, some migrate to settle or improve their businesses, some migrate to escape hardships of their countries, and some migrate to save their lives from religious persecutions, just to name a few. And in today’s world it looks very difficult to deny or eliminate every sort of migration; however, to make a positive use, it is possible and highly essential. In September 2006, the 132 Member States that participated in General Assembly reaffirmed that:

  1. Migration could make a positive contribution in development, in countries of origin and countries of destination
  2. They emphasised on the respect and fundamental rights of the migrants
  3. They recognized the importance of strengthening international cooperation

I believe that integration is not only possible but it is highly essential for the betterment and progress of a society.

Integration is a two way process: Two Categories – Rights and Obligations

  1. Responsibilities of a country or society in which migration takes place:
  • Establishment of Human dignity,
  • Fundamental human rights and acceptance of the migrants.
  • Host nation should honour the culture and religion of its immigrants.
  • RIGHTS: Their rights are that their traditions, cultural, religion and laws of the land must be respected and honoured
  1. Duties and responsibilities of the immigrants:
  • They must reciprocate respect and love; and become grateful to their hosts
  • They must abide by the law,
  • They should respect the customs, traditions and culture of the host country,
  • They make their contribution in the progress and betterment of the country
  • They must become willing to integrate, and to adopt all of the good things that this country has to offer.

Migration to Medina as an Example:

Here I quote a wonderful example of migration, which to me is really exemplary and that is the migration of Muslims from Mecca to Medina, because of hardships and persecution in their homeland. When they migrated to Medina their hosts welcomed them with open arms and offered them full support and help, and showed them great respect and dignity. The Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace be on him, established “Brotherhood” between hosts and migrants which is known as “Brotherhood of Medina”.

The immigrants did not take whatever was offered to them as their right, but they fully shouldered their responsibilities. They worked id f’id with the local communities, they respected their hosts, other religions and communities and the law of the land; and rather than becoming burden they in a very short period of time they started contributing in the society and economy of the state.

I think if both the host and migrants work with this spirit they can be useful and can contribute a lot to Malta. Here to make it clear that I am not promoting it, but just highlighting the points and aspects that can be useful for the progress of the country.

Media’s Role in integration:

As far as the role of media is concern, I think media can play a great role in integration:

1.  By covering the immigrants in positive light and showing their useful contributions to the society; because every human being has abilities and has something to offer.

2.  By showing the lives of well integrated immigrants with their local friends.

3.  By organising Interfaith dialogues; cultural events; and media can give coverage to their activities, and can encourage them to be part of the society

4.Programs to teach immigrants about Malta’s history, culture, heritage and language

5.  Covering the countries from which immigrants are coming in some positive light from the perspectives of tourism

6. Media can highlight positive aspects of their culture, traditions, customs and values; because every people have some good cultures, e.g. in Pakistan, in the Sindh province to which I belong to, has a very good culture that in a bus male always offer and vacate their seats to women, and there rarely one finds a woman standing in a bus. These sort of positive aspect will also give chance to find and learn something positive from each other.
7.  Highlighting the common humanity of all of us.

Our Community, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, always integrates very well in every country, and in Malta we are also very well integrated.

Here I would like to conclude with a quote of Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Current Supreme Head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Community; he says:

“There should be no compulsion in religion. Jews should be able to practice their religion freely; Christians should be able to practice their religion freely and Muslims likewise. However where the interests of the country are at stake then all citizens should work together for the betterment of the nation…”

“To be integrated it is necessary to believe the country you live in is your own and you must desire for it to succeed. Your relationship should be with the country not just with individuals within it. This is true integration.”

Thanks.

Muslim leader warns of devastating consequences of nuclear war

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad also sends congratulations to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II upon Diamond Jubilee

Last night, the World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Fifth Khalifa, spoke at length about the perilous state of the world and the impending threat of a nuclear war.

Whilst addressing the 9th Annual Peace Symposium, held at the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden and organised by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in the UK, His Holiness also sent a message of congratulations and prayers to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II upon the Diamond Jubilee.

The event attracted an audience of more than 1,000 people, including Government Ministers, Ambassadors of State, Members of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the Mayor of London and various other dignitaries and guests from all walks of life. The theme of this year’s Symposium was ‘International Peace’.

In his welcome address, Rafiq Hayat, the National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in the UK said that under the leadership of its Khalifa, the Ahmadiyya Community was constantly engaged in promoting values of peace, tolerance and loyalty to one’s country.

Siobhain McDonagh, MP for Mitcham & Morden and Chair of the UK All Party Parliamentary Group for the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, said that though progress had been made, there was still a much to achieve in terms of making sure that all people around the world were granted religious freedom.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, thanked the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat for‘contributing in so many ways’ towards promoting peace and tolerance in London and bringing people together. He pledged to always support the Jamaat and its charitable work.

Rt Hon Ed Davey MP, Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change, said that Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad was a ‘ great leader for peace’. He also spoke about the risk of climate change and its effects on food and water security in the world.

Stephen Hammond MP, read out a message from Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, in which he praised the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat for promoting tolerance throughout Britain’s communities.

Andrew Stunnell OBE MP, said the UK Government very much appreciated the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat towards promoting charitable works and community cohesion. He said it was his first visit to the Baitul Futuh Mosque and found it to be a ‘very impressive building’ .

Councillor Stephen Alambritis, Leader of Merton Council, said that the Council was ‘proud of the Ahmadiyya Mosque and proud of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’ .

Lord Eric Avebury said that not enough was being done to prevent wars and conflicts. He said to simply walk away from such challenges would be ‘morally wrong’. He said that despite being a victim of persecution in a number of countries, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat was leading the way in striving for peace throughout the world.

The 3rd Annual ‘Ahmadiyya Muslim Prize for the Advancement of Peace’ was presented by Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad to the charity ‘SOS Children’s Villages UK’ in recognition of its continued efforts to alleviating the suffering of orphaned and abandoned children around the world and towards fulfilling its vision of ‘a loving home for every child’. Accepting the award on behalf of the charity was its UK President, Dame Mary Richardson DBE, who said it was essential to always put the welfare of children first.

The highlight of the evening was the keynote address given by Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad in which he spoke about the need for all people and organisations to promote peace and justice; the discord within various countries; the rise of terrorism and extremism; the devastating effects of a potential nuclear war and the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat to promote peace in the world based on the true teachings of Islam.

Speaking about the needs of the time, His Holiness said that the vast majority of the world desired peace yet instead in all parts of the world conflict and resentment was rising. His Holiness said that such disorder was being witnessed in various different guises through internal rebellions and uprisings or conversely governments attacking their own public.

At an international level, governments and nations were jealously eyeing up the resources of other countries whilst major powers were consumed by a desire to maintain their power. Furthermore terrorists were waging wars and killing innocent people to fulfil only their own vested interests. His Holiness said that all of these issues were serving to completely undermine international peace and security.

Speaking about the need for justice in terms of international relations, His Holiness said:

“Unfair lobbying techniques, based on wealth and influence, should be abandoned. Instead the representatives and ambassadors of each nation should come forward with sincerity and with a desire to support the principles of fairness and equality. We must eliminate all forms of bias and discrimination, as this is the only means to bring about peace.”

Despite the worrying state of affairs, His Holiness counselled that it was essential that those who desired peace did not become disheartened and frustrated. Instead they needed to increase their efforts to bring about real and positive change in the world.

His Holiness said:

“I would request all of you to strive for peace to the best of your abilities so that we can keep the flicker of hope alight, that a time will come when true peace and justice will be established in all parts of the world.”

His Holiness cautioned that if immediate action was not taken to establish peace then the alternative was truly frightening. One likely scenario would be the outbreak of a nuclear war in which the majority of the world would be consumed and whose consequences would last for generations to come. Citing the example of Japan, His Holiness said that the nation and people of Japan, were more fearful and horrified by the prospect of war than any other and this was because Japan was the one country that had been targeted by nuclear bombs. Though seven decades had passed the country was still bearing the scars and effects of World War II.

His Holiness said:

“If a nuclear war breaks out, we will find that people will instantly die and freeze like statues, and their skin will simply melt away. The weapons available today are so destructive that they could lead to generation after generation of children being born with severe genetic or physical defects. Drinking water, food and vegetation will be all contaminated by radiation. We can only imagine what type of diseases such contamination will lead to.”

His Holiness added:

“It is my ardent wish and hope that the leaders of all major nations come to understand this dreadful reality. And so instead of adopting aggressive policies and utilising force to achieve their aims and objectives, they strive to adopt policies that promote and secure justice.”

Speaking about the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community towards developing peace and tolerance throughout the world, His Holiness said such efforts were inspired by the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

In an effort to save the world, His Holiness said that he had recently written to various Heads of State and world leaders to warn them of the dangers of the time. Apart from writing to His Holiness Pope Benedict, President Barack Obama and Canada’s Prime Minister, His Holiness said he had written to both Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urging them to end their mutual hostilities and avoid war.

In conclusion, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad spoke of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations taking place this year. He said that in 1897, the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, had congratulated Queen Victoria on her Diamond Jubilee and offered prayers for her and praised her Government’s commitment to freedom of religion. His Holiness said that using the same words used by the Promised Messiah, he too offered congratulations and prayers for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Offering his congratulations, His Holiness said:

“May our congratulations filled with happiness and gratitude to our compassionate Queen be conveyed. And may the honourable Queen always be kept happy and contented.”

And then the world leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat took the opportunity to pray for Queen Elizabeth II. His Holiness said:

“Oh Powerful and Noble God. Through your Grace and Blessings keep our honoured Queen forever happy in the same way that we are living happily under her benevolence and kindness. And be kind and loving to her in the same way that we are living in peace and prosperity under her generous and righteous rule.”

Following the conclusion of proceedings, His Holiness met personally with the various dignitaries, guests and also held a press conference the assembled media.

Ahmadiyya Malta Peace Symposium 2012

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta organised its annual “Peace Symposium 2012” on Friday 16th March 2012, at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, Floriana, Malta.

In this symposium Dr. Simon Busuttil MEP, Hon. Evarist Bartolo MP, Ms. Angele Deguara, Malta Green Party, Fr Edgar Busuttil, SJ, and Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad Ayaz O.B.E, delivered their talks on ‘Democracy, freedom, human rights, social justice, diversity and peace; the role of religion in politics and democracy and place of religion in modern society’. All the speeches were very interesting, informative and inspiring.

During the Symposium the Community also organised an exhibition about the holy books of different religions, including the Holy Bible and the Holy Koran, at the same venue.

Audience also put their questions to the speakers, and presented their comments. Nearly 70 people, from different sections of the society attended this Peace Symposium and Holy Books Exhibition.

In his welcoming address Laiq Ahmed Atif, President Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta, introduced to the gathering about the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat and explained that the Ahmadiyya Community organises similar meetings all around the world. The aim of these gatherings is to share knowledge, teachings, opinions and experiences on different subjects that can be helpful for the establishment of lasting peace in the world.

He concluded it with the following two quotations from the keynote addresses of His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Head of the Worldwide Ahmadiyya Community:

“Peace in society is a two-way process and can only be established if all parties work together towards mutual reconciliation.

Today we, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, are trying to bring peace in the world. We are playing our role and trying to fulfil our responsibilities in this regard. And so I would request all of you to join us in this task…

We must set aside our own personal desires and instead be concerned for the future existence and well-being of our next generations. We must adopt selflessness rather than selfishness. When we all join together and come to respect each other’s feelings and sentiments then and only then will an atmosphere of mutual love develop. It is then that we will truly see the beautiful society that all peaceful people desire.” (Opening of Tahir Mosque in Catford, London, on 11 February 2012)

Highlighting the importance of peace he further said:

“It is surely our duty to care for and respect one another. And the best way to practically demonstrate this esteem is to consider the feelings and sentiments of each other, because that is the primary way to establish good human values. And, it is the only way to develop an environment filled with peace, justice, reconciliation and brotherhood. It should be our goal to establish such high values in every village, every town, every city, every country, every society and indeed every part of the world.” (Opening of Baitul Aman Mosque in Middlesex, UK, 4th March 2012)

Helping deprived and destitute out of a desire for piety

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Community, outlined the key objectives with which the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, was sent by God Almighty as the Promised Messiah. He was addressing the reception of the opening of the Baitul Ghafoor Mosque, UK.

The Promised Messiah had been sent to bring mankind closer to God Almighty, to make the world aware of the need to fulfil the rights of God’s Creation and to bring an end to all religious warfare. His Holiness said that this was not a new teaching but the same teaching that had been brought by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

His Holiness also used his address to highlight the plight of those suffering from poverty and deprivation. He said those who were in a position to help had a moral duty to do so. In this regard His Holiness said:

“When destitute people feel that their deprivation has reached its peak, then it leads to the spread of restlessness and disorder throughout society and so ultimately the peace and tranquillity of the community is shattered. Therefore helping deprived people has multiple benefits, because where on the one hand, it helps to bring man closer to God, on the other it leads to the creation of a peaceful and harmonious environment. This is because those who were once impoverished, are finally able to stand upon their own two feet and gain self-respect and dignity.”

Speaking about the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Community towards sering humanity, His Holiness said:

“We, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, have a passionate desire to serve humanity. And whilst we do not have huge resources, still the members of our Community give generously in alms, according to their abilities, out of a desire for piety and in an effort to relieve the pain and suffering of humanity. Under the supervision and management of our Jamaat, many schools, hospitals, orphanages and various other projects are being established and administered in the poorer countries of the world. Our services are rendered irrespective of religious, ethnic or social background.”

His Holiness concluded his address by speaking about the true and peaceful teachings of Islam. Addressing the ways in which the Ahmadiyya Community chose to propagate its message, based on the true teachings of Islam, His Holiness explained:

“The Founder of the Ahmadiyya Community taught us that, today rather than using the sword, we must use the pen to spread the beautiful characteristics of Islam in the form of books, literature, and through the media. And also we must utilise all other positive means of educating the world about Islam’s real and loving teachings. This is the ‘Jihad of the Pen’ which the Promised Messiah (peace be upon him) brought and which he taught and this alone is a representation of true Islam. We, Ahmadi Muslims, follow this Islam, and it is this Islam that we spread and convey to others.”

Peace Symposium: Ir-reliġjon u l-politika għandhom jirrispettaw lil xulxin

Ir-reliġjon u l-politika mhumiex l-istess ħaġa iżda t-tnejn li huma għandhom jirrispettaw lil xulxin. U minkejja l-kontroversja kollha, r-reliġjon għandu rwol importanti fil-politika. Fil-fatt, dan hu rifless ukoll fil-politika li jaddotta l-Partit Popolari Ewropew fuq livell Ewropew.

Hekk sostna l-Ewroparlamentari Malti Simon Busuttil waqt il-konferenza Peace Conference 2012, organizzata mill-Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta, li trattat id-demokrazija, d-drittijiet umani, u l-liberta’.

Fid-diskors tiegħu, Simon Busuttil qal li l-politiċi għandhom jirrikonoxxu l-kontribuzzjoni li r-reliġjon tagħti fil-ħajja ta’ kuljum, u enfazizza li kemm ir-reliġjon kif ukoll il-politika mhumiex kontradittorji, iżda jikkumplimentaw lil xulxin. Dan peress li t-tnejn li huma għandhom l-għan komuni li jtejbu l-ħajja tal-individwi.

Simon Busuttil fakkar f’dak li kien jippriedka Fr. Peter Serracino Inglott, jiġifieri li l-Unjoni Ewropea għandha jkollha kuntatt regolari mal-knisja, li l-Unjoni Ewropea għandha tirrispetta l-prinċiju tas-sussidjarjeta’ fuq livell ta’ reliġjon, kif ukoll li l-Kostituzzjoni Ewropea għandu jkolla referenza għall-għeruq Insara fl-Ewropa. Simon Busuttil qal li l-Unjoni Ewropea taħdem ħafna fuq dawn il-prinċipji, iżda fakkar li r-referenza għall-għeruq insara fil-Kostituzzjoni ma teżistix peress li Franza kienet ivvutat kontra.

Let’s join together to Save the World from the Brink of Disaster

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat is pleased to announce that on 24 February 2012, its world leader, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad inaugurated the new Baitul Wahid Mosque in Feltham, London. The mosque was officially opened by His Holiness as he led the Friday Prayers at the Mosque with a sermon that was broadcast live across the world on MTA International.

This was followed by a formal evening reception attended by a number of dignitaries and guests, including Mary Macleod MP, Seema Malhotra MP, Councillor Amrit Mann and Lord Eric Avebury.

Mary Macleod, MP for Brentford & Isleworth congratulated the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat on the opening of the Baitul Wahid Mosque. She offered her support for the many peace initiatives undertaken by the Jamaat and praised the community’s role towards building a peaceful society. She also spoke of her concern at the continued persecution of Ahmadis in Pakistan.

Seema Malhotra, MP for Feltham & Heston, said that the Ahmadiyya community was constantly striving to bring people of all faiths and beliefs together. She said the values of the community made it an ‘example’ for others to follow and said she was sure the new Mosque would educate and bind the local community together.

The Mayor of Hounslow, Councillor Amrit Mann, called the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Hounslow ‘a model community’ . He praised the community’s motto of ‘Love for All, Hatred for None’ and its commitment to humanitarian efforts. Mr Jagdish Sharma, MBE, Leader of Hounslow Borough Council, said Ahmadi Muslims had the distinction of being ‘ law abiding and tolerant’ .

The function was concluded with an address by the Fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, in which he addressed various issues based on the true teachings of Islam.

At a time when people are being killed in Afghanistan due to the alleged burning of Holy Qur’an, His Holiness made it clear that Islam did not permit arbitrary violence or revenge in any form. He said:

“The Qur’an calls for the establishment of peace. It calls on Muslims to act compassionately towards all of mankind.”

His Holiness also referred to potential concerns of local people about the construction of a Mosque. Alleviating all such apprehensions, He said:

“This Mosque has been built only for the worship of God, and as a means to develop love, affection and peace. We have no other purpose, and we never will. Any true Muslim can never desire injustices or suffering for any other person because that would run entirely contrary to what the Qur’an and the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) have taught.”

His Holiness spoke about the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat’s continued efforts to promote peace and to help serve humanity. He said:

“Whenever and wherever we have been called to help and assist in good endeavours or in service to humanity, we have always heeded the call and come running to partake in those good acts. We do so, not due to any vested interests, but only due to our desire to seek God’s Pleasure and Nearness.”

The Khalifa also spoke about his admiration for British values of justice and equality. Speaking about how planning permission for the mosque was granted upon appeal, His Holiness said:

“Ultimately we were granted permission to build this mosque and this was because, as I have said many times, that here in the UK the system of governance is just and one which affords citizens their due rights. We, who are Ahmadi Muslims, always pray that God Almighty enables just and fair governments to be established throughout the world.”

His Holiness concluded by speaking about his concerns for the current state of the world. He said:

“The world today is fraught with danger and turmoil. We sit at an extremely critical juncture and so there is an urgent need for us to all recognise our Creator and to fulfil the rights of His Creation. As we stand on the brink of disaster, we must all join together in an effort to prevent such a huge catastrophe from befalling us.

Every individual in a society, irrespective of his background, has a role to play. We need to warn our leaders and governments to the dangers of this time. Otherwise if we fail in this task, and are led to a Third World War, then the horrific destruction that will befall us is apparent to all and lies in front of us. We must care for our future generations and not be consumed only by our own personal interests.”

During the course of the day, His Holiness also unveiled a commemorative plaque and planted a tree to further mark the inauguration of the mosque. His Holiness also held a private meeting with a number of the dignitaries.
