UK: World Muslim leader sends Message of Peace to Pope Benedict

The Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad has sent a direct message to Pope Benedict XVI calling for the Pope to use his influence to encourage religious tolerance and the establishment of human values throughout the world.

The message was delivered personally by the President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Kababir, Muhammad Sharif Odeh, who met the Pope as part of an official delegation of renowned Israeli religious scholars.

In his message, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, spoke of the perilous state of the world. He said:

“It is with regret that if we now observe the current circumstances of the world closely, we find that the foundation for another world war has already been laid. As a consequence of so many countries having nuclear weapons, grudges and enmities are increasing and the world sits on the precipice of destruction.

I believe it is essential, that we urgently increase our efforts to save the world from this destruction. There is an urgent need for mankind to recognise its Creator as this is the only guarantor for the survival of humanity.”

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad also said that the world should judge religions on their true teachings, not on the misguided acts of individuals or groups. He said:

“If a person does not follow a particular teaching properly whilst claiming to subscribe to it, then it is he who is in error, not the teaching.

From cover to cover, the Holy Qur’an teaches love, affection, peace, reconciliation and the spirit of sacrifice. Hence, if anybody portrays Islam as an extreme and violent religion filled with teachings of bloodshed, then such a portrayal has no link with the real Islam.”

Speaking about the role of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community practises only the true Islam and works purely to please God Almighty. If any Church or other place of worship stands in need of protection, they will find us standing shoulder to shoulder with them. If any message resonates from our mosques it will only be that of Allah is great and that we bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Him and Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah.”

His Holiness concluded by praying for world peace and urging all other parties to play their respected roles for this all important pursuit. He said:

“It is my prayer that we all understand our responsibilities and play our role in establishing peace and love, and for the recognition of our Creator in the world. We ourselves have prayer, and we constantly beseech Allah that may this destruction of the world be avoided. I pray that we are saved from the destruction that awaits us.”

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta participated in President’s Charity Fun Run 2011

A record-breaking some 11,000 people filled the streets from San Anton to Valletta in the third – and biggest – the yearly President’s Charity Fun Run for Istrina that took place this morning. The aim of this annual event is to collect funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund. Funds are mainly collected from the €10 donation made by each participant.

President George Abela was at the forefront of the run, whilst First Lady Margaret Abela lead a walk from Santa Venera.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta also showed its solidarity and participated in the President’s Charity Fun Run 2011. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat has a wonderful slogan of “Love for All, Hatred for None”, believes in serving mankind, and always tries its best to contribute for this noble cause.

Service to mankind is the essence of Islam. The Holy Quran places great emphasis on charitable works. The Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace be on him, has said he was sent for two missions: “One for service of Allah and the other for the service of mankind”.

The Holy Quran states: “And do not forget to do good to one another” (2:233)

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat celebrates African Independence

Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad urges African countries to protect the freedoms they have gained

On 26 November 2011, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat celebrated the Golden Anniversary of the Independence of Cameroon, Sierra Leone and Tanzania in an event organised by the Pan-African Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK. Dignitaries representing a number of African countries attended the function that took place at the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden, Surrey.

The highlight of the event was the attendance and address given by the Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad. His Holiness spoke of the need for unity amongst the people and leaders of Africa. He said that if all parties preferred the national interest to their personal interests, then Africa could become a true global power.

The event began with a welcome address by Issah Ahmed Wehma, the Chairman of the Pan-African Association, who said that it was always a pleasure for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat to host such events that promoted peace and unity.

Thereafter, various African Dignitaries took to the stage. His Excellency, Wesley Momo Johnson, Ambassador of Liberia, said that it was his fourth visit to the Baitul Futuh Mosque and that each time he came, he felt emotionally moved by the mosque and great warmth within it.

Mr Alhaji Bawah Gilbert Ayembillah, Consular Minister for Welfare at the High Commission of Ghana spoke of the contributions made by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat to his country. He said:

“I would like to thank the Ahmadiyya Community for its contribution to the development of Ghana. The work done for our people by your Community is incalculable. Thus I thank you on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana.”

His Excellency, Mr Edward Mohamed Turay, High Commissioner of Sierra Leone, said that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat had shown true commitment to bettering the lives of the people of Sierra Leone through its humanitarian projects.

During his keynote address, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad spoke of the inequalities that continued to exist between the people of various nations and their leaders. He said that in countries where monarchies or dictatorships existed, the rulers withheld most of powers, leading to restlessness and dissent within the society. On the other hand, even though democratic countries claimed to provide justice and equality, in many instances they were failing to do so. Unfair polices were being implemented and this too was leading to civil unrest.

His Holiness said that Islam had provided the solution to such problems. It taught selflessness rather than selfishness, where each party should be willing to compromise his own rights for the sake of the greater good.

Speaking about the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat’s humanitarian efforts, His Holiness said that the community had opened hundreds of schools and hospitals in various parts of Africa. Also, Ahmadi engineers were engaged in efforts to provide water, electricity and other services in remote parts of Africa as a means to help the deprived locals. Such services were rendered without any desire for recognition or reward.

Speaking about African Independence, His Holiness said:

“It is my heartfelt prayer that the African people are able to take full advantage and benefit from their independence. All countries should keep in mind that the leader of a country is the servant of that nation. Whichever laws or regulations are in force should apply just as much to the rich as to the poor. If this approach is maintained, then, God Willing, the freedoms that you have gained after long periods of colonial slavery, will come to be everlasting.

I firmly believe that if the African countries and people unite together and fulfil the requirements of justice, then one day, Africa will emerge as a true global power.”

Malta’s role should be written in Gold│Laiq Ahmed Atif

Source/Credit: The Times: Wednesday, October 26, 2011

The death of Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi has closed a chapter of four decades’ rule and opened a new chapter of freedom and democracy. The new beginning has started and now the Libyan people have to focus on establishing peace, freedom, democracy and human rights for all with equality and justice.

No doubt, as Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said, “news of someone’s death is always ugly but for the Libyan people it means the start of a new chapter that we hope will translate into a better life”. Yes, that’s absolutely true and we hope for a flourishing, happy, free, equal and democratic new beginning for Libya.

My intention to write this piece is based on the support and solidarity offered by Dr Gonzi to the Libyan people. As he said: “The Maltese will help according to our capabilities”.

Malta’s strategic and geographical position in the Mediterranean plays an essential, crucial and important role in the region, economically, socially and politically. And Malta has always played its important role whenever certain situations cropped up. In the recent situations and conflicts in the neighbouring countries, Malta once again proved its strategic importance and played a great and sensible role – a role that is highly recognised and admired by the international communities and countries.

The US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton recognised this role by saying “Malta may be a small nation in size (but) its contributions to regional peace and security are significant”. UK Foreign Secretary William Hague expressed his gratitude and said: “How grateful we are for all the assistance we have received this year, humanitarian assistance, particularly during the evacuation of British nationals from Libya”. These are just to name a few, since this role and assistance was recognised and appreciated by many countries around the world.

Malta’s humanitarian support for the Libyan people was enormous, with a sense of sincerity, affection and service to mankind. And Malta has once again proved that a friend in need is a friend indeed! Throughout the conflict the Maltese people and their government played a vital role.

In the very beginning of the conflict Malta helped with the safe evacuation of people of different nationalities from Libya. The humanitarian aid given in the shape of food, water and medicine and the provision of medical treatment and assistance to the injured people in Maltese hospitals are really highly admirable.

Malta’s role in saving the lives of two pilots who fled to Malta after having refused to bomb their own people was also highly admired. It was a great step taken by the Maltese government when it refused to return the Mirage fighters and pilots back to Libya and granted them refuge in the country.

In brief, the Maltese government and people left no stone unturned to help and support the Libyan people. This great and sincere support should be written in golden words and remembered forever.

Apostasy and UN Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a document to help and support mankind. And all those countries who have signed this declaration are duty-bound, morally and legally, to abide to all articles, clauses and regulations stipulated in this declaration. The very first article of this declaration speaks that ‘all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights’. That is to say that each and every single human being irrespective of colour, faith and politics has the right of freedom, equality, dignity and liberty. And that freedom should not be compromised and ignored by any member state of the United Notations.

This wonderful document duty-bounds all those nations and states, who have signed and endorsed this valuable document, to follow all its articles including 18, which states: ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.’ This article not only speaks about the free choice of religion, but also, clearly endorses the freedom to change any religion without any fear and punishment.

But, very unfortunately some Muslim-majority countries, despite the fact that they are the members of United Nations and have signed this document, impose the death penalty on those who disbelieve Islam and convert to any other religion. Recently, an Iranian court sentenced to death a Christian Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani, born in Muslim family, for apostasy. This case was appealed in the Supreme Court of Iran which ordered to retrial the case.

The irony is that there are many ordinary Muslims as well as their leaders and clerics who agree that a fellow Muslim who changes or abandons his or her faith should be hanged. And many even speak loudly, publicly also in media declaring those who change their faith liable to death.

Pastor Nadarkhani was arrested in October 2009 and has been held in Lakan Prison, Rasht, since being declared guilty of apostasy in September 2010. Nadarkhani was told that the death sentence would be annulled if he recanted his faith and returned to Islam. In appeal hearings, however, the pastor has refused to give up his Christian faith.

I believe that Nadarkhani should not have to pay any price for his freedom of faith; instead he should be released immediately and should be free to practice any faith he wishes. It is extremely amazing and frustrating that how can these Iranian (or any other Muslim) clerics enforce someone to believe in the religion they have chosen for themselves with their free will. Isn’t this so strange that when God did not force anyone to believe in any religion and declared ‘there should be no compulsion in religion’ and these clerics are imposing their ideas on others and are depriving others from their freedom and free will.

The Iranian courts are not only violating laws of their country as their being no such crime under Iran’s penal code, and their religion but they are also violating the international law. Their acts are also in violation of the ‘Universal Declaration of Human Rights’, the document Iran has signed and is duty-bound to abide by all its articles, morally and legally; and is a grave injustice. So, we appeal and call upon the Iranian government to stop itself from such injustices and violation of human dignity, rights and freedom and to release Pastor Yousef Nadarkahni and honour his freedom and liberty.

Respect and Dignity for the Dead – Islamic Perspective

(By: Laiq Ahmed Atif)

“Relate of your dead only that which is good, and refrain from speaking ill of them.” (Holy Prophet Muhammad, sa)

Death is an integral part of life and death is as real as life. Nothing is so certain as the fact that for all of us there will come a time when our life on this earth will end and our minds will no longer function. The life of a human being is limited on this earth and everyone has to leave this world to join the hereafter. Allah Almighty says:

“Allah has created death and life that He may try which of you is best in conduct. He is the Mighty, the Most Forgiving.” (Holy Quran 67:3) “God replied, ‘I will inflict My punishment on whom I will; but My mercy encompasses all things.” (Holy Quran 7:157)

Janaza Service (Funeral service)

The transitions from this world to the next and the disposal of a deceased are serious matters in all cultures and religions. In Islam death is treated with great respect and dignity. A deceased Muslim is due utmost respect and his body is handled according to the Sunnah (action) of the Holy Prophet, peace be on him. The body is given a ritual bath, and wrapped in two white sheets before being put in a coffin. Once it is prepared, the funeral service is held. The Imam leads the Funeral prayer, with the mourners standing in rows behind him. After this, the body is buried in a graveyard. Cremation is not permitted in Islam.

Before the advent of Islam people used to disrespect and dishonour the dead bodies of their enemies, they used to tear the dead bodies into pieces. Islam strongly condemned such actions and declared strong prohibition of any such actions. And taught its followers to show extreme dignity and honour to the dead, not only to their own but to each and every human being who dies.

Once when a funeral procession went by the Holy Prophet, peace be on him, he stood up to show dignity and respect, and those with him followed his example. Someone said: Messenger of Allah, this is the funeral cortege of a Jewish woman. He observed: Death is a matter of grief and awe, therefore, when you see any funeral passing you should stand up as a token of respect.

This is a true teaching of Islam and beautiful conduct of its Holy Founder. Below are some saying of the Holy Prophet (peace be on him), in reference to the dignity of dead. He said:

  1. “You are bound to be overtaken by death and then you will be either distressed or happy.
  2. When a person dies, all his actions cease except through a charity, the benefit of which is continuous, or a legacy of knowledge which benefits others, or righteous progeny who pray for him.
  3. Relate of your dead only that which is good, and refrain from speaking ill of them.
  4. Speak not ill of the dead or you will cause pain to the living.
  5. Do not sit over a grave, nor face towards it when you are praying.
  6. He who joins a funeral procession and takes three turns to help carry the bier has discharged his obligation to the dead.” (Wisdom of the Holy Prophet: P.64)

Blasphemy and the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw)

(By: Laiq Ahmed Atif, President Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Malta)

The issue of blasphemy is a hot issue that remains in news particularly in Pakistan. In 2010, a Christian woman Asia Bibi, who was charged with blasphemy in Pakistan, made the international headlines. But charging Asia Bibi under the blasphemy law did not apparently quench the radical thirst of the clerics of Pakistan. A Muslim cleric offered $6,000 to a person who would kill Asia Bibi. Tragically, the late governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer, who visited Asia Bibi in prison, was later gunned down by his own security guard, Mumtaz Qadri. Salman Taseer’s crime was to speak up for the victims of blasphemy law. The insanity continued unabated when after few weeks of the murder of Salman Taseer, a Catholic and Minister for minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti, was assassinated allegedly over his stance on blasphemy laws. The issue of blasphemy has once again reared its ugly head: the death penalty imposed by antiterrorism court against Mumtaz Qadri, the murderer of Salman Taseer, has been reversed.

The issue of blasphemy is not a new phenomenon. The instances of blasphemy are found throughout recorded human history. The Holy Quran, for example, points out very clearly that all the prophets and messengers of God were persecuted, harmed, abused and mocked, not only during their life time but also after their demise. “Alas for My servants! There comes not a Messenger to them but they mock at him.” (36:31) “Then We sent Our Messengers one after another. Every time there came to a people their Messenger, they treated him as a liar.” (23:45) Noah, Abraham, Lot, Saleh, Shuaib, Moses and Jesus, peace be on them all, just to name a few, were all mocked and blasphemed by their enemies and opponents.

Questions naturally arise: How did Prophets react to blasphemy? Did they ever punish the blasphemers? What was the end of those mockers and blasphemers?

The Holy Quran clearly speaks about the treatment of those mockers and enemies of God’s prophets; “And surely, Messengers have been mocked at before thee; but I granted respite to those who disbelieved. Then I seized them, and how was then My punishment!” (13:23) “And Messengers indeed have been rejected before thee; but notwithstanding their rejection and persecution they remained patient until Our help came to them. There is none that can change the words of Allah.” (6:35)

These verses make it abundantly clear and manifest that all the messengers observed extreme patience whenever they were blasphemed and they never tried to punish or respond to those blasphemers violently. All those mockers, blasphemers and enemies faced deadly consequences.

Another common element in their stories is that all the enemies were punished by God, and this is one supreme reality that can never change; “There is none that can change the words of Allah” (6:35).

Alas! This blasphemy did not stop even at the time when the sun of eternal truth rose over the skies of the Arab peninsula and the world was soon to bask in the light of the message of Muhammad, may peace be on him. The one waited for thousands of years, prophesied by thousands of prophets, and for whom the whole world was created and who was the clear manifestation and reflection of the full glory of the Creator. The one who was titled by the Almighty God as “mercy for all the worlds”, our beloved Master and Lord, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), endured every form of punishment, torture, persecution, blasphemy, mockery and torment suffered by the earlier prophets and messengers. He was called “the one most mean” (63:9), he was treated as a ‘liar’ (35:26), he was labelled as a ‘fabricator’ (16:102) and he was called as ‘madman’ (15:7).

He was also physically tortured, persecuted and blasphemed. “The Prophet was stoned by ruffians and vagabonds and was chased and pelted by urchins till the cobblestones of Taif ran red with his blood. And at the battle-ground of Uhud the Prophet was seriously wounded.” (Murder in the Name of Allah p. 6)

His followers were severely persecuted and the land became very tight and narrow for them… They were laid out in the blazing sun, heavy stones were put on their chests, they were dragged through the streets like dead animals and chattels, they were socially boycotted, and they were forced to live in a valley for three long and hard years. They were deprived of all their freedom, property and belongings. Their dead bodies were cut asunder; the liver of the Prophet’s uncle Hamzah, may Allah be pleased with him, was even eaten. Pregnant women were thrown off camels.

The Holy Quran states: “Verily, those who malign Allah and His Messenger — Allah has cursed them in this world and in the Hereafter, and has prepared for them an abasing punishment. And those who malign believing men and believing women for what they have not earned shall bear the guilt of a calumny and a manifest sin.” (33:58-59)

How clearly the Holy Quran has mentioned the fate of the opponents of God and His Messenger that God alone has the authority to punish those who malign, mock or blaspheme God and His prophets. God did not permit anyone, not even the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) to punish such people.

Unfortunately, many people around the world including many Muslims believe that blasphemy is a worldly punishable act, and Muslims are duty-bound to punish mockers and blasphemers. They believe that if someone speaks against God, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw), the Holy Quran and Islam he must be punished with death penalty.

However, the reality completely differs from such concepts and the Islam taught by our beloved Master Muhammad (saw) speaks of no worldly punishment whatsoever against blasphemy. No question of death or anything else for that matter. The Holy Quran has provided a clear guidance on this matter and states: “…when you hear the Signs of Allah being denied and mocked at, sit not with them until they engage in a talk other than that; for in that case you would be like them” (Ch.4 v.141)

It should be noted that instead of punishing the blasphemers, believers are advised to leave the company of such people until they change their discussion.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) through his practices made it absolutely clear that there is no worldly punishment for blasphemy and the matter rests in the hands of Almighty Allah.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) once owed money to a Jew. The Jew came to him mistakenly thinking that the amount was overdue, and confronted the Holy Prophet (saw) and demanded his money using very harsh and blasphemed words and accused him of not honoring his promise. He also insulted the Holy Prophet (saw) and also his tribe. Hadhrat Umar (ra), who was also there, extremely annoyed and perhaps was about to strike him. The Holy Prophet (saw) stopped him for doing so and said: “Umar (ra), you should have behaved differently”. He didn’t even let Umar (ra) to speak harsh words to the Jew. This was the Holy Prophet’s (saw) behavior when openly insulted and blasphemed in the company of his companions.

As mentioned earlier, when the Holy Prophet (saw) went to Taif for preaching them the message of God, they mocked at him, blasphemed him and tortured him and his whole body was ripped red with blood. God sent his angle to ask him if he wishes the whole village should be tore into pieces. That was an opportunity for him to say yes to teach a lesson to the rest that if anyone blasphemes him, he can be punished or destroyed. But, our beloved Master Muhammad (saw) instead punishing those mockers and blasphemers prayed for them to God “My Lord! Forgive them, because they don’t recognise me”.

The history of mankind also witnessed those moments when the Holy Prophet (saw) – the King of Peace, entered into Mecca as a victorious and declared an open forgiveness::

“By God, you will have no punishment today and no reproof” (Hisham). He forgave all his enemies including Ikrama son of Abu Jehal the leader of opponents and Hinda who tore the chest of the Holy Prophet’s (saw) uncle Hamzah (ra) and ate his liver out of spite, after he was martyred during the battle of Uhad. He also forgave Habbar who had murdered several Muslims including the murder of the Holy Prophet’s (saw) daughter Zainab (ra). He also pardoned Abu Sufyan, one of his greatest enemies who also led many wars against him..

One cannot describe in detail the enormities, atrocities, blasphemous behaviour committed against Islam and the Holy Prophet (saw). Yet how easily the Holy Prophet (saw) forgave them!

Let me also quote a particular incident which took place during the life of the Holy Prophet (saw), also briefly recorded in the Holy Quran, and alone can refute the idea of punishing the blasphemers. No Muslim can claim to know Islam more than the Holy Prophet (saw), so, let us have the true understanding of this issue from him directly and let us see how he treated with blasphemers.

“Before the Holy Prophet’s (sa) arrival in Medina, there was a prominent leader who by the consensus of Medinite, was rising to be their joint leader. His name was Abdullah Bin Obey Bin Salul. After the Prophet’s (sa) arrival things gradually changed and instead of Abdullah, the Holy Prophetsa was accepted by the common consensus of people as their new leader. This made Abdullah Bin Obey Bin Salul extremely jealous. He went on giving voice to his injured feelings in one way or another. His behaviour was such that the other Muslims referred to him as the chief monaafiq, meaning the chief of hypocrites.

Once, when returning from an expedition which was overall a failure and all participants were extremely tired and disappointed, this man Abdullah, thought it a fit time to take his revenge. In the presence of a few people, he declared that upon returning to Medina, the noblest among them would turn out in disgrace the meanest of them. The message was clear and everyone knew what he meant. Hadhrat Umar (ra), upon hearing this, asked permission of the Holy Prophet (sa) to kill this man; he said that the insult on the person of the Holy Prophet (sa) was far too much for them to tolerate. But the Holy Prophet (sa) did not allow any retribution.

It is reported that after this, Abdullah’s own son also approached the Holy Prophet (sa) and said: “Oh Messenger of God, perhaps you thought that if you had permitted someone else to kill my father, I being his son, may harbour a private sense of revenge. However my father deserves this punishment for the insult he has hurled against you, so please permit me to slay him.” The Holy Prophet (sa) smiled and said: “No, there is nothing to be done. Your father will not be punished by anyone.”

They all returned to Medina and for many years this man lived in peace under the full protection of the Holy Founder (sa) of Islam, against whom he had blasphemed. When he died, the Holy Prophet (sa) decided to lead his funeral prayers. This was a bit too much for some of his companions. Umar (ra) reports that he blocked his passage and said: “Is he not the leader of the hypocrites? Is he not the one about whom God has said that even if you ask forgiveness for him seventy times, he would not be forgiven? Then why O Prophet of God, who is the recipient of all these revelations, have you decided to lead his funeral prayer?’; The answer was: “Umar, get aside; if God has informed me that he would not forgive the hypocrites even if I prayed for them seventy times, I would pray much more than that in the hope that Allah will ultimately forgive them”.

Such was the character of the Holy Founder (sa) of Islam. He was a man of extreme compassion, a man of principles, a man who lived a life of truth and nothing but the truth.” (The Seal of Prophets Pages 33-34; edition 2003)

The teachings of the Holy Quran and the examples of the life of the Holy Prophet (saw) refute all the misconceptions and misunderstanding about the punishment of blasphemy by any human being or any state; and entirely leave the authority in the hands of God, and this is a supreme reality and commandment of God and ‘there is none that can change the words of Allah.’

Blasphemy? Is blasphemy a punishable act in Islam?

It is said and believed by many people, including unfortunately many Muslims, that the punishment for blasphemy is death. Such an assertion is totally incorrect. The Holy Book of Islam, the Holy Quran – the source of all the guidance mentions nowhere that the punishment for blasphemy is death, nor even a lesser punishment. One should read whole Quran, again and again, but will not find a single verse or commandment in reference to the worldly punishment of blasphemy. No doubt, according to Islam blasphemy is a crime, very despicable and offensive and provocative, but the authority of punishment is entirely in God’s hand; and only He can punish the culprit as He may like, in this world or in the hereafter.

Blasphemy means behavior or language that shows disrespect for any prophet or any religion. Blasphemy not only hurts the religious sensibilities of others, but it also disturbs the peace and harmony of any society and even causes law and order problems. No doubt, the freedom of speech is necessary for the progress and development of a society. But this freedom must not be used to insult religions. That is why Islam forbids blasphemy but does not prescribe any worldly punishment for it. The Holy Qur’an tells us that there has been no Prophet in respect of whom derogatory words were not used.

“But there never came to them a Prophet but they mocked at him.” (Ch.43 v.8)

“Then We sent Our Messengers one after another. Every time there came to a people their Messenger; they treated him as a liar …” (Ch.23 v.45)

“Alas for My servants! There comes not a Messenger to them but they mock at him.” (Ch.36 v.31)

The Holy Qur’an mentions many blasphemous utterances of the nonbelievers and hypocrites against the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) without mentioning any physical punishment for perpetrators. Allah advised the Holy Prophet (sa):

“We will, surely, suffice thee against those who mock” (Ch.15 v.96)

“And follow not the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and leave alone their annoyance, and put thy trust in Allah; for Allah is sufficient as a Guardian.” (Ch.33 v.49)

“Bear patiently then what they say …” (Ch.20 v.131)

“You shall surely be tried in your possessions and in your persons and you shall surely hear many hurtful things from those who were given the Book before you and from those who set up equals to God. But if you show fortitude and act righteously, that indeed is a matter of strong determination.” (3:187)

Instead of killing the blasphemers, the believers were advised to leave the company of such men, until they change the topic of their talk.

“And He has already revealed to you in the Book that, when you hear the Signs of Allah being denied and mocked at, sit not with them until they engage in a talk other than that; for in that case you would be like them. Surely, Allah will assemble the hypocrites and the disbelievers in Hell, all together;” (Ch.4 v.141)

We have evidence in the traditions of the Holy Prophet (saw) where Abdullah bin Ubayyee (Chief of the hypocrites) continuously abused the Prophet (saw), and opposed him severely in Madinah.

When he passed away, the Prophet (saw) stood to offer his funeral prayers but was asked by one of his companions, “O Allah’s Apostle! Do you offer the prayer for this man although he said so-and-so on such-and-such-a day?” and “that he is a hypocrite!”
The Prophet (saw) ignored his statements and continued to offer the funeral prayers of the dead man. (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 192)

The above example shows that the Prophet (saw) never ordered any punishment for anyone who insulted or abused him or God; on the contrary he went to pray for them that they be guided aright.

If somebody uses foul language against any holy person or teaching, Islam advises to keep away from such people as The Holy Qur’an says,

“And when you see those who trifle with our signs then turn thou away from them until then engage in a discourse other than that and if Satan cause thee to forget then sit not, after recollection, with the unjust people.”   (Ch.6: V.69)

Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad (ra) the IV Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community says:

“There is no such punishment for blasphemy in the Holy Quran or in the Traditions of the Holy Prophet of Islam. Blasphemy against God is mentioned in the Holy Quran in the following words: ‘And abuse not those whom they call upon besides Allah, lest they, out of spite abuse Allah in their ignorance.’ (Ch. 6:109)

No authorization has been granted to any man to inflict any punishment for blasphemy against God. Blasphemy was committed by Jews against Mary, the mother of Christas. It has been mentioned in the Holy Quran, where it says: ‘And for their disbelief and for their uttering against Mary a grievous calumny.’ (Ch.4:151)

Again no punishment other than by God Himself is prescribed.” (Murder in the name of Religion)

What is sin? Importance of Fear of God

Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat and the Promised Messiah as says:

“What is sin? It is to go against the will of God and to violate His instructions given to mankind through prophets and especially through the Holy Prophet [Muhammad], sallallaho alaihi wa sallam. Sin is to reject boldly the guidance that is given to them and which they have understood properly. He who violates the commandments of God in connection with this guidance and acts mischievously attracts the wrath. The consequences of this temerity and boldness is not only this much that he will go to the hell in the next world; in this world also he will have to taste punishment and he will be humiliated.

Same is the case with the authorities that be in the worldly affairs. They promulgate a law and make it known to the people. Later on whoever is found violating it, he is charged and punished. But so far as the punishment of the worldly laws is concerned, one can manoeuver to leave that domain and go elsewhere and get rid of them. For example if one violates the law of the British Government, he can run to France or to the domain of Kabul and thus he can save himself from the punishment. But where can a man flee after the violation of the commandments of God, for, the earth and the sky that we see belong to Him. There is no earth and no sky elsewhere; belonging to someone else where one may seek refuge. This is why it is very essential that one must always have the fear of God and never show boldness in violating His commandments. Sin is a very bad thing and when a man becomes bold and does not fear the violation of the commandments, then the wrath of God descends on him in this world as well as in the next world.” (Malfoozat vol. 6, pg. 392)

Clean heartedness is essential to become recipient of God’s blessings

From the writings of the Promised Messiah as the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat:

“In order to become recipient of the blessings and Grace of God the Almighty it is very essential that one must have a clean heart. Nothing can be gained without it. What is really required is that when God peeps into the heart of the man, there should be no iota of hypocrisy in any nook and corner. It is only this state of the heart which attracts the Manifestation of God – and that makes the relations between God and man, very straight forward. For all this, one must be loyal and sincere as Hazrat Ibrahim [Abraham], peace be upon him, was; also, as the Holy Prophet, sallallaho alaihi wa sallam was. When a man walks on their footsteps he becomes a blessed man and is saved from every kind of humiliation; he is also provided amply and his circumstances are never straitened. Rather the doors of the Grace of God are opened for him and he joins the group of the people whose prayers are accepted by God. Such a person never dies the death of an accursed person; his end is always good.

In short, whoever is sincere and loyal to God, he is granted all his wishes – and he does not come across any disappointment.” (Malfoozat vol. 6, pg. 376)

Humanity First – Serving Mankind

MY AIM AND THE DESIRED OBJECTIVE IS TO SERVE MANKIND! (The Promised Messiah as)

“It is not righteousness that you turn your faces to the East or the West, but truly righteous is he who believes in Allah and the Last Day and the angels and the Book and the Prophets, and spends his money for love of Him, on the kindred and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and those who ask for charity, and for ransoming the captives.” (The Holy Quran 2:178)

Humanity First is a charitable organisation working under the fold of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat. Humanity First was founded by Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad(rah) Khalifatul Masih IV in 1994. It was conceived with the back drop of hunger crisis in Somalia in 1992 and the war in Bosnia. This was the time when the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat tried to help the victims of these crises, but faced difficulties in serving them directly because of being a religious organization.

We were forced to hand over the food and supplies to other agencies working in those areas at the time. Hadhur was deeply touched by the situation. He perceived the need and opportunity for the Jamaat to establish an independent charitable organization to serve mankind, without any distinction of faith, race, or ethnicity. Humanity First was conceived and formally established as a result of this vision. Hadhur further advised the organizational leads that Humanity First should not limit itself to engaging Ahmadis alone, but be inclusive of other noble souls as well.

Today, Humanity First is registered in 33 countries across 6 continents, and has been working on human development projects and responding to disasters since 1995. These have included the earthquakes in Turkey, Pakistan, Japan and Iran, floods in Africa and Latin America, storms and tsunamis in the USA, Indonesia and Bangladesh, and conflicts in Eastern Europe. Over 93% of donated funds are spent directly on aid projects. With the majority of our labour including skilled engineers and clinicians being volunteers along with preferential rates for materials benefiting from global sourcing, Humanity First is often able to deliver a value of aid many times the value of donations provided. US Embassy Malta: FZL organises Let’s discuss gender: National and International Perspectives

On Tuesday 6th September at the US Embassy a programme titled “Let’s discuss gender: National and International Perspectives” was organised by the Labour Youth Forum (FZL).

Mrs. Tayyibah Taylor, the guest speaker visited from USA, delivered her talk about the “Gender: The International Perspective”. Mrs. Taylor is the chief editor of the Azizah magazine and was named to the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World list by the Middle Eastern think tank The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies. She has also travelled to many countries and has experienced the situation of women in different societies.

She highlighted many important points regarding gender equality and women’s participation in social matters, and how women can play a greater role in society. She also discussed the case of Mukhtaran Mai, a familiar name to most Pakistanis. In 2002, she was raped by 4 men from a rival tribe as per the decision of local elders in a tribal jirga. The story of the jirga decision is a fascinating tale itself in how our judicial and extra-judicial systems sometimes work in rural Pakistan. She also discussed her struggle for the women’s rights.  Dr. Roberta Lepre, a lawyer by profession discussed the ‘Gender: The National Perspective’.

This was a very informative gathering. It was chaired by Ms. Veronica Barbara, the member of FZL. Mr. Elijah Waterman, the US Embassy Public Affairs Officer, concluded the event with his concluding Remarks.

Mr. Laiq Ahmed Atif, president Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta, Hon. Owen Bonnici, Member of Parliament, and other guests attended the event.

A message of loyalty and peace on 10th Anniversary of 9/11

The 9/11 is known as a day of an extreme terrorism and heinous crime against humanity. Ten years ago on this day 3,000 people were put to death, and thousands of families and millions of peace loving people were left to feel a great pain and sorrow in their hearts and minds on this great human loss. And this year is the 10th anniversary of these barbaric and heinous attacks. The worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat has since then condemned these terrorist attacks and has spread the message of peace and loyalty all around the world.

Terrorists caused death and destruction on Sept. 11, 2001. But they also hijacked the faith of Islam. By painting a violent, militant picture of the religion, terrorist extremists have created suspicion of all Muslims. But the truth is that terrorists do not represent Islam or Muslims.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has, since its founding, upheld the sanctity of all life as emphasized by Islam. The Holy Quran teaches that life is sacred and reaffirms Biblical teaching that whoever unjustly kills a single person is as if he had killed all of mankind; and whoever saves the life of one person is as if he has saved the life of all of humanity (Quran: 5:33). In his Farewell Pilgrimage address, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Even as this month, land and day of Pilgrimage are holy, so has God made the blood, property and honor of every human being sacred.”

Laiq Ahmed Atif, president Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta, said:

“The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta has also launched its nationwide campaign for peace and loyalty. The campaign includes ‘Peace Conferences’, ‘Inter-faith Dialogues’ and distribution of flyers by our members door-to-door and in public areas. On Saturday and Sunday 10-11, September the Community is distributing these flyers to the public. The Community in Malta believes in loyalty to Malta, in respect, in freedom and in peace. The community extremely believes in the sanctity of human life. It will also be appropriate to inform that our Community in USA has launched a campaign to collect 10,000 units of blood during these days; and the Community will hold blood drives at all its mosques and prayer centers across USA, and in collaboration with other community organizations. The goal is to collect enough blood to save 30,000 lives in honour of those who lost theirs on 9/11.”

Laiq Ahmed Atif, president Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta, said:

“We do not justify terrorism of any kind whatsoever, whatever the colour, religion, sentiment or objective the terrorist may claim to represent. Islam does not approve of disorder in any form. Islam is far from teaching terrorism. It teaches rule of law, obedience to the authorities and does not let anyone take the law into his own hands. The Holy Quran states: “O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey His Messenger and those who are in authority over you.’ (Ch.4: V.60)

The words, those in authority, in their wider significance include even such non-Muslims as may happen to be in authority over Muslims. The practice of the Holy Prophet as well as his sayings make it clear that in secular matters Muslims should obey even such of their rulers as are not Muslims. And if some people say that it is not necessary for a Muslim to follow any non-Islamic government, this is utterly false and against Islamic teachings as mentioned above.

So, members of Ahmadiyya Community are loyal to the cause of peace and to the countries they live in. Our members in Malta are law abiding and extremely loyal to this country and we always try to serve this country as much as we can.

We pray may peace prevail in the world. Long live Malta!”

Democracy a role model for the Arab world!

By: Laiq Ahmed Atif, president Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta

“Government of the people, by the people, for the people” these are the words of US president Abraham Lincoln to define democracy. The term democracy comes from the Greek language and means “rule by the (simple) people”. Philosophers have defined the essential elements of democracy as separation of powers, basic civil rights and human rights, religious liberty and separation of religion and state.

The online Wikipedia describes: “Democracy is a form of government in which all citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Ideally, this includes equal (and more or less direct) participation in the proposal, development and passage of legislation into law. It can also encompass social, economic and cultural conditions that enable the free and equal practice of political self-determination.”

A true democracy has two main pillars which make this system to progress more and in the right direction. First, democratic process of elections must be based on trust and integrity. So when one exercises his vote, he should vote for those who are most capable of discharging their national trust and are in themselves trustworthy. And second pillar is that whenever governments make decision; they should follow the principle of absolute justice. Be the matter political, religious, social or economic, justice may never be compromised. Hence no partisan interest or political consideration should be permitted to influence the process of decision-making. In the long run, every decision taken in this spirit is bound to be truly of the people, by the people and for the people.

In brief, the real democracy is the government chosen by people and that reflects the people in its pristine purity, where people’s voices are heard, where people have an equal right to express their decisions, where everyone has an equitable and fair treatment. I believe that, inasmuch as God’s sovereignty extends over the whole universe, the ultimate ideal of a state is universal federation, or confederation, of autonomous states, associated together for upholding freedom of conscience and for the maintenance of peace and co-operation in promoting human welfare throughout the world.

When we ponder over the current prevailing situation in Arab states, we can easily find that most of the rulers are not chosen by people, people have no right to speak out their opinions, their voices are not heard in the avenues of the governments and there only seems one man or one ideology show. These rulers once came in power, and remained for ages and now when the people have announce their decision, still they are trying to prolong their era.

They have exercised violence, government bodies and the police, which is duty bound to maintain the law, are being used against people to make their voices unheard and to make them silent. They have used heavy weapons against opposition and other political parties to save their so-called governments. Hundreds of people since have been killed mercilessly, thousands have been injured, thousands have been left as widows and orphans and the loss to the economy is also not less than millions.

This is totally unacceptable and absolutely against the basic freedom and fundamental rights of citizens of a country, and at large is against the country and its progress and competitiveness. I think they should have read what has been written on the wall, and they should have given the right to people to choose their leaders, and if they think that their existence is inevitable, still let the people decide and let the world judge how famous such leaders are.

This situation was unfolded in many countries; it started from Tunisia, moved to Egypt then translated into Libya, Bahrain, Yemen and Syria. This all happened because the rulers paid no attention to the problems of their people, their education and medical needs were not met according to the standards, their unemployment and job issues were not discussed properly.

I think a true democratic system of government should be a role model for these countries. And establishment of a government based on consultation, justice, equality and accountability is inevitable in these states. A mutual consultation is very important for a progressing and competitive government, as the essence of a true democracy is also mutual consultation. And when people will have the right of criticism and freedom of expression before the ruler, which are important features of democracy, then the government will progress smoothly and when government will be accountable, only then corruption can be stopped and fair dealing can be guaranteed.

The democracy in its letter and spirit is most certainly preferred to all other forms of government. However, there are many Arab lands exist under absolute monarchies or despotic rulers; or under dictatorships for decades. It is an irony of history that contemporary Arab states’ political thinkers and intellectuals, too, should now begin to see democracy as a model.

And time has come to give people their freedom and right to choose their leadership according to their choices and to decide their fate themselves and to choose democracy as their role model.

9/11 and Islam: Islam unreservedly condemns every form of terrorism

By: Laiq Ahmed Atif, president Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, Malta

Today the world is facing great threats of terrorism. Thousands of innocent people have been killed and still there seems to be no end to this cruelty. Some blame Islam as a religion of grave terror and bloodshed. But, in reality, there is no connection between Islam and terrorism at all; Islam is as closely related to terrorism as light is to darkness or life is to death or peace is to war. Islam very strongly condemns terrorism and encourages establishing peace and order in the land.

However, one cannot deny that on many occasions some Muslims are found involved in terrorist activities either individually, on behalf of a group or on behalf of a country with a predominately Muslim population.

But let it be very clear that we do not justify terrorism of any kind whatsoever, whatever the colour, religion, sentiment or objective the terrorist may claim to represent. Islam does not approve of disorder in any form. Islam does far from teach terrorism. It teaches rule of law, obedience to the authorities and does not let anyone take the law into his own hands. The Holy Quran states:

“O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey His Messenger and those who are in authority over you.’ (Ch.4: V.60)

The word “obey”, which has been repeated before the words “Allah” and “Messenger” has been omitted before the words, those who are in authority, in order to point out that obedience to the authority properly constituted by law is in reality obedience to God and His Messenger.

The Holy Quran further states that “those who create disorder in the earth, they are the real losers”; “and commit not iniquity in the earth, creating disorder”; “and Allah loves not disorder”. Such words and phrases are found in the Holy Quran repeatedly.

After this clear teaching such terrorist actions of some Muslim individuals or groups have no cover or justification at all, and they must be condemned widely. And those who are involved must be brought in front of justice.

As far as Islam is concerned, it categorically rejects and condemns every form of terrorism. It does not provide any cover or justification for any act of violence, be it committed by an individual, a group or a government.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, which is a peace loving and law abiding community, strongly condemns all acts of terrorism anywhere in the world. The Ahmadiyya Community very boldly and loudly, without any fear, speaks against terrorism. We also call on all Muslims in the world to join us in condemning all actions of violence and terror caused or carried out by anyone whoever he or she may be. We call on all of them to boldly claim and express with their tongue and action that they are loyal and law-abiding and obedient citizens, and join us in spreading a message of peace, love, harmony, tolerance and brotherhood.

We reject and condemn all acts and forms of violence and terrorism unreservedly and totally, because it is our deeply rooted belief that not only Islam but also no true religion, whatever its name, can sanction violence and the bloodshed of innocent men, women and children in the name of God.

God is love, God is peace!

Love can never beget hatred, and peace can never lead to war.

Serving mankind: Ahmadiyya distributes fruit packets to families living at Hal Far Refugee Camp

Laiq Ahmed Atif, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta distributed packets of fruit to the families living at Ħal Far Refugee Camp on August 29, 2011.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat is always committed to help those who are in need irrespective of their faith, creed, nationality or politics, on the basis of ‘humanity first’ and ‘love for all hatred for none’. It organises charity events for the vulnerable people of this planet, all around the year, and especially prior to the celebration of Eid festival in the end of Ramadan, a month of sacrifices, self purification and fasting. Fasting during Ramadan not only fosters discipline, strength and increased focus on worship; it also inspires sympathy for the hungry and poor and encourages Muslims to donate generously to those who need it the most.

The best example of kindness is that of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). His kindness was limitless and without any discrimination. Once on shaking hands with a labourer, he realized that his hands were rough and calloused form the hard work. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took the hands in his own and massaged them gently repeating several times: These hands are very dear to Allah. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) showed appreciation to his fellow beings. He said:    One who is not grateful to mankind is not grateful to Allah. (Tirmidhi)

The Promised Messiah (peace be upon him) had great compassion for mankind. Love of humanity and forgiveness were two of his major characteristics. He wrote:

“I look upon no one as an enemy. I have the same love for all mankind as a mother has for her children. I am only an enemy of false beliefs and untruths. Sympathy for all is a moral obligation and a duty. (Arbaeen)

That religion is no religion that does not inculcate sympathy, nor does that man deserve to be called a man who does not have sympathy in him. (Message of peace)

Humanity First: Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta Contributed in Humanitarian Aid for Libya

“My aim and the desired objective is to serve the mankind”  (Promised Messiah as, the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Community)

Laiq Ahmed Atif, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta presented food items together with milk and water to the Civil Protection Department, as a Humanitarian Aid for Libya. He met with the officers at duty and presented them the items and explained about the services of the Ahmadiyya Community for humanity.

Laiq Ahmed Atif prayed and said that, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat hopes and prays for the peace and security of Libyan people as they are passing from a hard and difficult time. May God bless them all and may peace prevail soon in Libya.

The Promised Messaih(as) , the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat, declared more than hundred years ago, in his book, A Message of Peace’:

“Irrespective of whether we are Muslims or Non-Muslims, and although we have many differences, we believe in God Who has created this world and all that is contained in it. We also claim commonality as human beings. It is our duty that we should become friends with a clear conscience and honest intentions. We should sympathise with each other on all matters temporal or religious. My Friends! That faith is no faith that does not teach sympathy for mankind. A human being is not human unless he displays some element of sympathy. Our God has made no distinction in any nation. Whatever faculties were given to the ancient nations have been given to the Arab, Persian, Chinese, Japanese, European and American nations. The earth serves as a common ground for all and the Sun, the Moon and the Stars perform common service for all mankind. These divine manifestations teach us that we should also treat each other equally, with amity and with tolerance. Narrow-mindedness or hard-heartedness has no place in human relations.”

The Promised Messiah (peace be on him) had a great compassion for mankind. He said, “Sympathy for all mankind is a moral obligation and a duty (Arbaeen)…that religion is no religion which does no inculcate sympathy, nor does that man deserve to be called a man who does no have sympathy in him (message of peace).”

The Promised Messiah (peace be on him) said, “The teachings of the Holy Qurán can be divided into two major categories. The first being unity of God, love and obedience to Him. The second is to treat kindly your brothers and fellow beings… be kind and merciful to humanity…always work for the good of mankind.”

Taking the cue from the Promised Messiah (a.s.) you would note Ahmadi Muslims excel all others in their commitment to prayers, in praying for the needy and the suffering and serving mankind at every level and at every time, irrespective of faith, colour, nationality or politics.

Loving Humanity: Ahmadiyya presents gifts to the elderly

Laiq Ahmed Atif, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta visited the elderly residents, asked about their health, wished and prayed for their good health and presented them fruit packets as a goodwill gesture and gift at St. Vincent de Paul Residency, on 29th August 2011.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat is always committed to help those who are in need irrespective of their faith, creed, nationality or politics, on the basis of ‘humanity first’ and ‘love for all hatred for none’.

It organises charity events for the needy people of this planet, all around the year, and especially prior to the celebration of Eid festival in the end of Ramadan, a month of sacrifices, self purification and fasting. Fasting during Ramadan not only fosters discipline, strength and increased focus on worship; it also inspires sympathy for the hungry and poor and encourages Muslims to donate generously to those who need it the most.

Islam pays a great importance to serving mankind and looking after the old and elderly people. This activity of the Ahmadiyya Community is a clear manifestation of its care for the old and elderly people of society. The Founder of Ahmadiyya Community has given a very clear message of kindness to humanity, to his followers, he says:

“The principle to which we adhere is that we have kindness at heart for the whole of mankind. If anyone sees the house of a Hindu neighbour on fire and does not come forward to help extinguish the fire, most truly I declare that he does not belong to me. If anyone of my followers, having seen someone attempting to murder a Christian does not endeavour to save him, I most truly declare that he does not belong to us. ……….. I love mankind with the love that a compassionate mother has for her children; even more so.”

US Embassy Malta Hosted an Iftar Dinner

The US Embassy Malta hosted its annual Iftar Dinner on Thursday 25th August with about 100 guests including the Imam of the Paola Mosque Muhmmad El-Sadi and the National President Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta, Laiq Ahmed Atif.

The Chargé d’ Affaires of the US Embassy Mr. Richard M. Mills and his respected staff welcomed the guests at the dinner.

America is known for its diversity and freedom of faith and expression and it has accepted and honoured people of different colours, races and religions. And leaders of this nation show respect to the traditions and customs of different faiths. This Iftar Dinner was also a great manifestation of great human values and dignity.

U.S. President Barack Obama recognized this very fact in his speech to the Muslim world in Cairo.  He said:

“Freedom in America is indivisible from the freedom to practice one’s religion. That is why there is a mosque in every state of our union, and over 1,200 mosques within our borders. That is why the U.S. government has gone to court to protect the right of women and girls to wear the hijab, and to punish those who would deny it.”

Both Muslim religious leaders thanked the Chargé d’ Affaires of the US Embassy Mr. Richard M. Mills and his respected staff for their great gesture and honour. They also prayed for the success of the great work they are carrying on. May God the Almighty reward them from the best. Ameen
