Forbearance

Forbearance is a valuable moral quality. It not only provides calmness in adversity but also facilitates to sail out successfully and smoothly from the storm. Those who remain calm and steady during the undesirable circumstances are more likely to perform better than those who panic or become nervous. Therefore, we must furnish ourselves with this moral quality; and teach our children from childhood that if someone has said something unpleasant to them or something has happened to them then there is no need to panic or become nervous, but remain calm and keep your courage and morale high.

___________ The Holy Quran ___________

  • “Those who spend in prosperity and adversity, and those who suppress anger and pardon men; and Allah loves those who do good.” (3:135)
  • “Make forbearance thy rule and enjoin equity and turn away from the ignorant.” (7:200)
  • “The wronged one, who endures with fortitude and forgives, indeed achieves a matter of high resolve.” (42:44)

___________ Ahadith ___________

  • You possess two qualities which Allah loves: gentleness and endurance. (Muslim)
  • Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness and bestows upon gentleness that which He does not bestow upon harshness or anything else. (Muslim)

On an occasion, a Bedouin ran up to the Prophet Muhammadsa and pulled his cloak with such force that it bruised his neck. Then he vehemently demanded to be given money. In this moment, the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa did not instruct for this person, who had acted in such an unbecoming manner to the most beloved Prophet of God to be attacked; instead, the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa remained calm, smiled, and instructed that the Bedouin should be given some money. (Bukhari Kitabul Nafaqat wa Kitabul Libas, Bab Al-Bard, taken from Gardens of the righteous, p. 132)
