Ramadan – a Muslim month of fasting, sacrifice, prayers and self-purification

Who can understand the importance of food and water more than those who have ever passed through hunger, thirst or any kind of famine during their life time? The month of Ramadan is also an exercise for having such hard and difficult experiences. And these experiences, at one side provide opportunity to reform the spirituality and to increase in the love of God, on the other, they are also a time to understand the sufferings and problems of those who do not have sufficient food or water for their life; and to develop great feelings for the vulnerable and destitute people of this planet. Indeed, the Ramadan is a clear understanding of the two basic principles of Islam – rights of God and rights of people.

It is obligatory for Muslims to fast one month every year in the month of Ramadan. The Holy Quran states: “O ye who believe, fasting is prescribed for you during a fixed number of days as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may safeguard yourselves against every kind of ill and become righteous.”

The true purpose of Ramadan, as of all forms of Islamic worship, is to draw people closer to Allah and closer to mankind. Though normal pursuits and occupations are carried on as usual, the emphasis on moral and spiritual values and concentration on them are intensified, and everything is subordinated to the main purpose. The hearing, the sight, the tongue, the mind are all under stricter control. For instance, not only vain talk, but much talk is also eschewed, so that there should be greater concentration on remembrance of Allah and reflection upon His attributes.

The Holy Quran elaborates more and says:

“The prescribed fasting is for a fixed number of days, but whoso among you is sick or is on a journey shall fast the same number of other days; and for those who are able to fast only with great difficulty is an expiation — the feeding of a poor man. It is better if one performs a good deed with heart-felt pleasure and in obedience. If you possess knowledge, you would appreciate that fasting is better for you.”

According to one Hadith, the Holy Prophet saw said that in addition to one’s spiritual development, fasting is necessary for our physical health as well which is confirmed by today’s science and the physicians.

Therefore every Muslim should first keep this in mind that fasting has been prescribed for the sake of Taqwa and rigor is necessary to attain Taqwa. Sacrifice in the path of God is necessary for attaining His pleasure. We should take advantage of the exemptions that Allah the Exalted has granted us as a favor looking at our condition and inabilities but should not exceed the limits.

The Promised Messiah as, the Founder of Ahmadiyya Community said:

“The one, whose heart looks forward to Ramadan so he could fast, will not be deprived of the (blessings of) fast in the heaven if an ailment prevents him from fasting in Ramadan. There are many people in this world who are used to making excuses and think that they would be able to deceive God the way they deceive other people in the world. The ones who are accustomed to making excuses look for issues and add other tangential details to justify themselves, but they are not justified before God the Exalted. As far as the ancillary discussions are considered, they could go on forever. If one desires, one could offer salat in sitting position for his entire life and never keep fast, but God is aware of everyone’s intentions. God the Exalted knows the one who has a pure heart, and He rewards him more as He appreciates the heartfelt pain. The people who make excuses depend on self-concocted justifications but these explanations have no value before God the Exalted.”

“The Promised Messiah as further said, “When I fasted for six months, once a group of prophets met me (in a vision). They asked me why I had put myself through such hardship, and advised me to abandon it.” Promised Messiah as said, “So when man puts himself through hardship for the sake of God, He, very compassionately says like parents that why he has put himself through hardship.”  (Malfoozat, Volume 2, p.564, New Edition)

Fasting in Islam begins everywhere at the first appearance of dawn, and ends with sunset. During this period one is expected to abstain from all food and drink completely.

It is not just physical hunger and thirst that constitute the Muslim fast, but the nights prior to the beginning of the fast acquire a far more important character and play a central role in the institution of fasting. The Muslims wake up many hours before dawn for individual prayer and the remembrance of God.

Also the Holy Quran is recited in every Muslim house much more than in ordinary days. A greater part of the night is thus spent in spiritual exercises which make up the very essence of fasting. During the day, apart from restraining oneself from food and water, all Muslims are particularly exhorted to avoid vain talk, quarrels and fights, or any such occupation as is below the dignity of a true believer.

In Islam, alms-giving and care for the destitute is so highly emphasised that it becomes part of a Muslim’s daily life. However when it comes to Ramadan, the month of fasting, Muslims are required to redouble their efforts in this field. It is reported of the Holy Prophet that spending in the cause of the poor was a routine daily practice with him which has been likened unto a breeze, never ceasing to bring comfort and solace to the needy. However during Ramadan, the reporters of the Ahadith – the sayings of the Holy Prophet (Peace be on him) – remind us that the breeze seemed to pick up speed and began to blow like strong winds. Alms-giving and care for the destitute are so highly emphasised, that in no period during the year do Muslims engage in such philanthropic purposes as they do during the month of Ramadan.

The institution of fasting is extremely important because it cultivates the believer in almost every area of his spiritual life. Among other things, he learns through personal experience about what hunger, poverty, loneliness and discomfort mean to the less fortunate sections of society. Abstention from even such practices during the month of Ramadan as are permissible in everyday life plays a constructive role in refining the human character.

May Allah the Exalted help us to benefit the most from the blessings, bounties and favours of Ramadan, and may He forgive us all our sins and may He accept all our prayers. Ameen

‘Our Teaching’ so said the Promised Messiah

Belief in God is the foremost essential condition of Ahmadiyya Movement

The Promised Messiah and Imam Mahdi, the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas, says:

“Relevant to a proper observance of my teaching, it is essential that one should firmly believe that there is an all-Powerful, all-Sustaining Supreme Being, the Creator of everything, Changeless, Everlasting and Eternal. He does not beget, nor was He begotten. He is Holy, so that there is no need or occasion for Him to go on the Cross, or suffer in any way, or be subject to death. He is such that being far removed, He is still very near; and being very near, He is still very far. Although He is One, and absolutely unique, His manifestations are diverse and multifarious. Whenever there occurs in man a new change, for the changed man He becomes a new God, dealing with him on the basis of a fresh manifestation, the man witnessing a change in God in proportion to the change in himself-not that there occurs any change in God, He being Eternal, Changeless and most Perfect in Himself; but with every change in man for the better, – God also reveals Himself to him in a fresh and clearer manifestation.

With every progressive effort on the part of man God also shows Himself with higher and more powerful manifestation. He displays an extraordinary manifestation of His power and glory only when man shows an extraordinary change in himself-this being the root and the bedrock basis of the marvels and miracles witnessed at the hands of all servants of God.

Belief in this God with these powers, is the foremost essential condition of our Movement. Inculcate this belief in your hearts, giving to its implications and requirements the first and top most priority over all considerations of self, over its comforts and relationships. By means of actions in the field of your daily life, with unflinching courage, show a steadfast loyalty in His way. Others in this world do not give Him preference over material means and the support they hope to get from their friends and relations. But do you give Him the first place, so that in heaven you should come to be reckoned His people.

To show signs of grace is the eternal way of God. But you can partake of this blessing only when there remains no difference and no distance between Him and you; only when all your wishes, hopes and desires merge into His will; only when, at all times, in success or failure, in hope or disappointment, you remain in humble prostration at His door, so that He should do with you what He will. If you act like this, in you would appear that God, Who for a long time has kept His face – concealed from the world.

Is there any among you, then, who would act upon this teaching, seeking only His pleasure, without the slightest sense of dissatisfaction against the way His will works? Even in distress you should put your best foot forward, for this is the secret of your success; and you should strive to the utmost of your power to spread the idea of His singleness and unity all over the earth.” (Kashti-e-Nooh, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 19, pp. 10-11)

Humanitarian calamity

Source/Credit: The Times of Malta, Saturday April 15, 2017.

There is nothing more desirable than peace, prosperity and happiness. War wreaks destruction and devastation and is the foundation of acrimony and animosity. Justice, dialogue and reconciliation is the antidote for wars and conflicts.

The Holy Quran repeatedly condemns war, declaring it a catastrophic fire: “Whenever they kindle a fire of war God extinguishes it. And they strive to create disorder in the earth and God loves not those who create disorder.”

The Syrian conflict now is in its seventh year. Every day was painful, difficult and miserable. However, the latest chemical attacks leave one stunned and speechless.

The horrific videos and gruesome pictures of children gasping for air in the last moments of their life have shocked every sane and sensible person.

To me, such attacks are against humanity and should be sufficient to shake our consciousness and make us stand up against such brutalities and barbarism.

How many more deaths does the world need to witness before robust efforts are made to secure peace and find a political solution for the Syrian people?

The international community and, particularly, the neighbouring Muslim countries should play a vital role in extinguishing this fire of hatred and stop vested interests and thirst for power, which have caused mass destruction and shattered and ruined the entire country.

Moreover, the world powers should not stand by any of the parties involved in this war but act as mediators to bring both parties around a table and engage them in dialogue to find a political and permanent solution.

In the Holy Quran, God says: “And if two parties of believers fight against each other, make peace between them; then, if after that one of them transgresses against the other, fight the party that transgresses until it returns to the command of Allah. Then, if it returns, make peace between them with equity, and act justly. Verily, Allah loves the just.”

This verse provides a most effective remedy to quarrels and to settling disputes between two parties.

The United Nations can play a crucial role because the country in question is included in its charter. The UN should insist on settling any differences and resolve the dispute through dialogue. It should act as a facilitator so both parties would set the terms for peace and reconciliation.

In case the government refutes any political solution, collective measures should be taken against it and collective efforts made to force it to end the war.

To start the process of ending this massacre of innocent people, including children, I believe that, first and foremost, the provision of weapons to both parties involved in the conflict must be halted.

The Holy Quran also calls for Taqwa (righteousness) in the hearts of both rulers and masses, so an agreement can be reached.

It says: “And help one another in righteousness and piety but help not one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah; surely, Allah is severe in punishment.”

Prophet Muhammad also drew the attention of rulers to their responsibilities. He said that the day when there is no shade other than the shade of God, He will grant shade to seven people and first among them will be a just and fair Imam. He also said that, on Judgement Day, the most beloved and the closest to God would be a just and fair ruler and the most disliked and most distant from God would be an unjust ruler.

He also said that Paradise would be forbidden to a person who is given charge over and responsibility for the people but is negligent. These commandments are matters for rulers to ponder over. If they wish to be God’s beloved they have to stop injustice. If they wish to make it to Paradise, then they have to work for the well-being of everyone without any discrimination.

When highlighting the democratic system of selecting leaders and running the business of State justly, the Holy Quran states: “Allah commands you to make over the trusts to those entitled to them and that, when you judge between people, you judge with justice.”

In this verse, the right of authority has been called as trust. Hence, anyone who receives an opportunity to govern should understand that this is a trust, which has been endowed upon him by the people.

The concept of trust is further highlighted by the Prophet Muhammad; it is mentioned that, on appointing a companion as the Amir (leader) of a region he said: “You are a weak individual and rulership is a trust. On the day of judgement, rulership shall be the cause of humiliation and disgrace, except for such a person who completely fulfils its rights.”

May we absorb God’s mercy and do our utmost to establish peace and spread love and compassion.

May God protect the world from the horrors and destruction of war.

May God bring peace in Syria.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta organised annual Peace Symposium 2017

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Malta, in collaboration with KSU (university student council), held an exhibition about the Holy Quran and the annual Peace Symposium titled “Jihad & Terrorism” in the KSU Common Room, at the University of Malta, on 28th March 2017. Around 50 Roll-Up Banners with the teachings of the Holy Quran, on different subjects, were also exhibited.

In her welcoming speech Ms. Steph Dalli, President KSU, spoke about multiculturalism and diversity and said, “Diversity enriches our societies and communities, and provides ample opportunities of sharing and learning from each other. The motto of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, ‘Love for all, Hatred for none’ is very inspiring and indeed is the essence for achieving the milestone and shared objective which is peace.”

First Irish Imam Ibrahim Noonan – who was invited for the peace symposium – said that, “When I look at the Quranic teachings, I see no room for terrorism in Islam. The Holy Quran states, ‘This [Quran] is a perfect Book; there is no doubt in it; it is guidance for the righteous (2:3).’ The word Taqwa which is used in this verse means righteousness, God fearing, God-consciousness, piety, virtues and abstaining from evil. This word has been used through the Quran repeatedly advising Muslims to always act upon righteousness and abstain from evil. So, a true Muslim cannot be extremist or terrorist. My own teacher had told that just as fire and water cannot live together, so is it impossible for a true Muslim to be a terrorist.”

Laiq Ahmed Atif, President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Malta, explained the true meaning of Jihad and said, “The root of the Arabic word Jihad is Jahada meaning to struggle and to strive. Thus Jihad means to strive to the utmost for the achievement of a purpose and to leave nothing undone in acquirement of it. According to the Holy Prophet Muhammad – the founder of Islam, peace be on him, there are three main categories of Jihad.

First: The Jihad that is waged against oneself; to fight against egoism, false sense of pride, arrogance and mischief; and for the self-purification. In Islamic terminology it is called the Jihad-e-Akbar – meaning the greatest Jihad.

Second: The Jihad to preach the word of God through the Holy Quran and is called the Jihad-e-Kabeer, meaning the great Jihad.

Third: The Jihad that is waged against the enemy of freedom of conscious, and in self-defence. This is called the Jihad-e-Asghar – meaning the lesser Jihad.”

He concluded his speech with a quotation from a speech of His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, 5th Successor to the Promised Messiah, and Worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, who said, “Our Jihad is not a Jihad of swords, guns or bombs. Our Jihad is not a Jihad of cruelty, brutality and injustice. Rather, our Jihad is of love, mercy and compassion. Our Jihad is of tolerance, justice and human sympathy. Our Jihad is to fulfil the rights of God Almighty and of His Creation.”

Secular education at state schools

Muslim leader calls for secular education at state schools

‘State schools should not teach religious doctrine, but provide students with basic knowledge about every religion’

Source/Credit: Malta Today, by Tim Diacono, 28 March 2017

Education at state schools should be secular and void of religious doctrine, the leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Malta has said.

Laiq Ahmed Atif told MaltaToday at a conference that religious education at state schools should be limited to providing students with a comparative study of different religions.

“States and religions are different entities and each should play their own role. State schools should provide secular education to all students irrespective of their faith,” he said. “Muslim students can go to imams and prayer schools to learn about their faith, and similarly for Christians and Jews. The state’s role shouldn’t be to indoctrinate students but to provide them with basic points about each religion.”

In light of the impending closure of the Mariam al-Batool Muslim school in Paola, Imam Mohammed El Sadi has said that Muslim students should be allowed to learn Islam at state schools.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna said that he would be open to allowing Muslim students to have separate classes in Islam while their peers have their normal Catholic religion classes, a suggestion that prompted an online petition calling for his removal.

Education minister Evarist Bartolo said that like all other subjects, Islamic studies would need to adhere to a programme approved by the ministry and which would lead to SEC certification.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was founded in 1889 by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who Ahmadis believe is a prophet. This has placed them in conflict with traditional Muslims, who believe that Mohammed was the last prophet.

During the conference at the University, which was held to address common misconceptions of jihad and terrorism, Atif admitted that there existed a degree of friction between the Ahmadiyya community and the Sunni Muslim community led by Imam El Sadi.

However, he extended a hand of friendship to the Imam and called for more dialogue to develop between the two communities.

“Dialogue with other Muslims is crucial and no Muslim should every deny this; dialogue is a starting point for us to demolish barriers and build bridges,” he said. “The Holy Quran states that Muslims should unite with Christians and Jews in their common belief of God. Muslims have so much in common with each other, so why don’t we unite on our commonalities?

The Ahmadiya Muslims were addressing a conference at the university

The Ahmadiya Muslims were addressing a conference at the university

“As a community, we always preach the importance of building bridges and we have never resisted dialogue towards the common good.”

Similarly, Irish Imam Ibrahim Noonan – who was invited for the conference – said that Atif has often tried to open up dialogue with El-Sadi but that the latter has kept on resisting.

“We will keep on pushing for dialogue. We recently held a brief conversation with the Imam but it is clear that they are not open to it.”

The two Ahmadi leaders both argued that terrorism had nothing to do with the tenets of Islam, with Noonan going as far to say that people who carry out acts of terror in the name of Islam are not truly Muslims.

“If you understand the source of Muslim knowledge, then it is impossible to envision using it as an excuse for terrorism,” he said. “My own teacher had told that just as fire and water cannot live together, so is it impossible for a Muslim to be a terrorist. Some people say that not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslim, but how can any terrorist be Muslim at all when the Quran teaches love, harmony and righteousness?’

Atif said that Islam upholds the principles of human dignity and freedom, and the Quran stipulates that Muslims should act benevolently to people of other faiths. Ignorance is the greatest enemy of humanity and is often exploited for terrorism. How can a young child who knows nothing of the religion believe that killing a human being will send him to paradise?” Malta Today

State schools should not teach religious doctrine

State schools should not teach religious doctrine, says Muslim community leader

Ahmadiyya president says state schools should be secular

Credit/Source: Times of Malta, Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Education offered to students in state schools should be secular and no religion doctrine should be supplied, Ahmadiyya Muslim Community president Laiq Ahmed Atif said today.

Mr Atif was reacting to the request made by Imam Mohammed El Sadi that Muslim students be taught Islam at secondary school following the announcement that the Mariam Al Batool School would be shutting its doors for older students.

“I have been following the issue and I believe that religion and state should always remain separate. State schools should be providing secular education to all students equally,” Mr Atif said.

If the state wants to give lessons on religion, then this should be a comparative study of all religions and not as doctrine.

The Ahmadiyya is an Islamist reformist movement founded in the 19th century and encapsulates a few million people in more than 200 countries.

According to Mr Atif the students would then go their respective religious leaders for education, suggesting Imams and priests.

“If the state wants to give lessons on religion, then this should be a comparative study of all religions and not as doctrine but some basic points on the different religions,” Mr Atif said.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community president Laiq Ahmed Atif.Ahmadiyya Muslim Community president Laiq Ahmed Atif.

He insisted that the state schools should serve to bring the students together and not to further separate.

The debate on whether Islam should be taught in schools has been fuelled with different views on the matter.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said he had no problem with the suggestion, provided that teaching was accredited by the education authorities and recognised in the same way as other subjects.

Archbishop Charles Scicluna also reacted, saying Church schools should be able to teach Islam to Muslim students if this was feasible.

He insisted that while Church schools would remain Catholic these had to also respect the religious freedom of others. Times of Malta

Protecting a magnificent masterpiece

Credit/Source: The Malta Independent on Sunday, Sunday, 5 March 2017 by Laiq Ahmed Atif

“I’m actually in love with Gozo and find it incredibly intriguing; the culture, the way of life, the intense natural beauty everywhere, all of it. I went to the Azure Window, the Citadel and the Ġgantija Temples – I’m so fascinated by it all,” a friend of mine from England who recently visited Gozo told me. This is what I often hear from whoever visits Gozo and particularly the iconic and gorgeous Azure Window in Dwejra.

Such inspiring compliments make us proud of having a beautiful country with wonderful natural attractions. On the other hand, we must also be responsible and take care of them. The full protection and care of this national heritage is extremely important, for our benefit and for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.

The Azure Window, whose stunning geography of the area was created thousands of years ago when two limestone caves collapsed. It is one of the Maltese Islands’ most distinctive sites, attracting thousands of tourists every year, from all walks of life and from all over the world. It does not attract a person once but many a times; and this attraction is irresistible. I myself have visited Azure Window dozens of times, with family and friends.

In recent months, the Azure Window has been in the news because of the negligence in protecting this masterpiece gifted by the Almighty God. A video posted in November last year showed parts of the Azure Window falling off. On this one particular event, a man is seen jumping off the edge of the natural arch, followed by large rocks which came loose after he had walked over them.

The rough seas have seriously affected the Azure Window and in recent weeks it exposed its fragility further when the pounding waves broke off a large slab from the base of one of its cliffs.

The authorities have put signs warning visitors off, but it looks that a few signs are simply not enough. The media has reported people walking on the iconic arch, which is crumbling into the sea, even after the new sings were placed. At one particular event, it was reported that around 27 people were walking on it.

Recently, I saw some old photos of the Azure Window taken in 1980, which show that it was much bigger in size than it is today. With the passage of time, it is has become smaller and smaller.

Due to natural erosion and human negligence, this iconic sight may fall or divide into pieces if concrete measures are not taken, depriving future generations from enjoying its magnificent beauty. If that happens, it will be an irreparable loss.

The situation is alarming and I think this site needs urgent attention and preservation.

The Azure Window is a gorgeous spot and one of nature’s beautiful masterpieces and, at the same time, it brings economical benefits to Gozo and Malta, as thousands of tourists visit this site every year. Without the Azure Window, the attractions of Dwejra will be limited.

I think a permanent structure under the arch to protect it and save it from further damage and loss of size should be considered. Secondly, one needs to make sure that no one walks on it; measures taken already must be enforced fully, without slacking. There must be emergency numbers so when anyone notices any contraventions the authorities will be alerted immediately. The site should be supervised at all times.

An encouraging initiative has been taken as the government has allocated a fund of €200,000 and appointed a committee of experts to carry out studies and researches on Dwejra to be considered a world heritage by UNESCO.

I think the Azure Window is a marvellous masterpiece of natural beauty which makes Gozo very attractive. Any loss to this lovely site will be a loss to Gozo and Malta, and no doubt a loss for future generations. It would be wise to protect and preserve the Azure Window before it is too late. Our paradise

our-paradise

“Our paradise is in our God. Our highest delight is in our God for we have seen Him and found every beauty in Him.

This wealth is worth procuring even though one may have to lay down one’s life to procure it.

This ruby is worth purchasing though one may have to lose one’s self to acquire it. O ye, who are bereft, run to this fountain and it will save you. What shall I do, and by what drum shall I make the announcement that this is your God, so that people might hear? What remedy shall I apply to their ears so that they should listen.

If you belong to Allah, rest assured that Allah will indeed belong to you.”

Time to build bridges, not walls

by Laiq Ahmed Atif. amjmalta@gmail.com

The contemporary period presents extra-ordinary challenges for economic, religious and social issues, law and order, extremism and of rapid changes in global politics. The religious and political divisions are increasing. Traditional politics is being replaced with new populist slogans, anti-establishment ideology and with the idea of bringing extensive and overall changes to the current system of governance.

Regrettably, the world is divided into blocks, vested interests and social classes, and this division is further highlighted and sustained with slogans of building walls and adopting divisive policies. In many parts of the world, far greater priority is being given, either directly or indirectly, to asserting dominance and supremacy over others and satisfying a craving for power and authority.

The world stands in great need of peace, tolerance, mutual understanding, harmony, love and brotherhood. The world needs an end to wars and conflicts. Instead of walls of hatred being erected, we need peace to prevail, and for this to happen, people of all faiths, creeds, colours and political affiliations must join together. How rightly it has been said that “united we stand, divided we fall”.

I believe that wisdom demands learning lessons from our history, because the turbulent times we live in today cannot afford further divisions, barriers and walls. The history of the Berlin Wall alone is sufficient proof against building walls and in favour of building bridges which unite people across the globe.

Undoubtedly, walls create distance, isolation and exclusion, and bridges bring people closer and create unity and strength.

The instrument of politics should be used sincerely, effectively and wisely for the common and greater good of mankind

I am afraid that such conflict-ridden policies will bring no benefit to the people. Instead these may fuel radicalism and extremism, or the extremists may exploit such situations. In a globalised world, the effects of political decisions are felt across the globe. Leaders must be very sensitive and cautious when forming or adopting policies.

I think politics is an art and instrument of dialogue and persuasion. This instrument should be used sincerely, effectively and wisely for the common and greater good of mankind.

As far as the issues and disputes between nations and countries are concerned, it should be encouraged to find lasting and feasible solutions through mutual consultation, dialogue, collaboration and collective wisdom.

Our common religious teachings are characterised by effective resources and solutions in order to counter the challenges and disagreements that arise between nations and countries.

Justice, kindness, sympathy, humility, humbleness, patience and wisdom are among the core principles that religion teaches us and which can solve all the disputable matters.

The Holy Quran states: “Verily, Allah enjoins justice, and the doing of good to others; and giving like kindred; and forbids indecency, and manifest evil, and wrongful transgression.” (16:91)

“And help one another in righteousness and piety; but help not one another in sin and transgression.” (5:3)

Jesus said: “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”(Matthew 5:44-45)

Let’s all unite and work together to build a cohesive, inclusive and peaceful world and to sow the seeds of love and sympathy for the entirety of mankind.

We must work hard and leave no stone unturned in promoting tolerance, harmony and brotherhood. We must seek to build bridges of love and hope between different religions and different communities and societies – because it’s time to build bridges, not walls.

I would like to conclude with a great message from the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, who writes: “If you are an elder, be kind to the younger ones and do not belittle them.

“If you are rich, serve the poor but do not treat them with pride and disdain.

“If you wish God to be pleased with you, then be like two brothers born of one mother.” Original Post.

Laiq Ahmed Atif mil-Komunità Ahmadiyya f’Malta jitkellem dwar il-projbizzjoni ta’ vvjaġġar għall-Musulmani mill-President Amerikan Trump

Il-kwistjoni dwar restrizzjonijiet ta’ ivvjaġġar ta’ persuni minn seba’ pajjiżi lejn l-Istati Uniti, qed titqies bħala “sfortunata kbira għad-dinja moderna u globalizzata”. Dan iddikjarah Laiq Ahmed Atif, President tal-Komunità Ahmadiyya f’Malta meta kkummenta ma’ it-Torċa dwar din id-deċiżjoni. Hu qalilna li dan il-pass se jwassal għal aktar estremiżmu u firda.

lealtaFil-kummenti tiegħu hu qalilna li “dan kien imħabbar fi żmien ta’ taqlib enormi, u meta diġà għandna estremiżmu u radikaliżmu mferrex madwar id-dinja. Daż-żmien jeħtieġ l-għaqda u mhux d-diviżjoni u l-firda. Dawn id-deċiżjonijiet jistgħu jżidu l-estremiżmu u l-mibegħda fost in-nies. Irridu biex naħdmu kontra t-terroristiċi u mhux kontra l-pajjiżi b’maġġoranza Musulmana li jsofru u jbatu mill-estremiżmu huma stess. Ma ngħidx li nagħlqu għajnejna dwar is-sigurtà, dak li ngħid huwa dan li ma niħdux passi li jxerrdu mibegħda u firda. Is-sigurtà tiġi l-ewwel u qabel kollox, u hemm modi oħra konkreti li jiġu wżati għas-sigurtà.

Enfasizzalna li “dawn ir-restrizzjonijiet huma wkoll kontra d-drittijiet bażiċi tal-bniedem, u f’xi każijiet jaffettwaw lin-nies li huma l-aktar vulnerabbli li qed ifittxu kenn mill-inġustizzja, il-vjolenza, u l-persekuzzjoni. Naħseb li l-politika diskriminatorja ħafna drabi tagħmel iktar ħsara mill-ġid. Għalhekk, nitlob li d-deċiżjonijiet għandhom jittieħdu bil-għaqal profond sabiex ikattru l-ġid, l-imħabba u mhux il-ħsara u l-mibegħda.

“Nemmen li wasal iż-żmien li d-dinja tgħix skont il-motto tal-Komunità Aħmadija Musulmana li fil-fatt huwa motto universali u l-katalizzatur tal-paċi li huwa: “Imħabba għal kulħadd, mibegħda għal ħadd.”

The future of Europe

Source/Credit: The Malta Independent on Sunday, 12 February 2017, by Laiq Ahmed Atif

Recently Malta hosted a summit with European leaders about the need to stem migration through the Mediterranean and to discuss the future of Europe. Last year the Britain voted in favour of Brexit. The post Brexit situation and issues related to it has now become a very important concern all over the world and particularly in the European Countries. The European Countries are also now discussing what the future of Europe will be. Has the European Union proved to be an institution of prosperity and strength for the 500 million people who make part of the EU?

In December 2012, the Head of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Hazrat, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, made his first visit to the European Parliament in Brussels where he delivered a keynote address in which he highlighted many important issues and spoke about the formation of European Union. He said: “The formation of the European Union has been a great achievement on the part of European countries, for it has been a means of uniting the Continent. Thus, you should make all possible efforts to preserve this unity, by honouring each other’s rights. The fears and worries held by members of the public must be removed. To protect each other’s society, you should be willing to accept fair and just demands of one another, and of course, there should be fair and just demands by the people of each and every country.

“Remember that the strength of Europe lies in its remaining united and together as one. Such unity will not only benefit you here in Europe, but also at a global level for this Continent to maintain its strength and influence.”

I think this message is very strong, and undoubtedly, “United we stand, divided we fall.” Today, when the world has emerged as a global village, the unity of European countries will definitely be instrumental for strength and prosperity of its people and the member states.

At the Malta summit, French President François Hollande also stressed that for an influential EU, unity is the key factor. He said: “We must have a European conception of our future. If not, there will be – in my opinion – no Europe and not necessarily any way for each of the countries to be able to exert an influence in the world.”

I am convinced that the existence of the European Union is not only important but also crucial for peaceful coexistence. The strength of the EU is essential and vital to balance world power and Europe’s strategic position is always very significant in playing its decisive role in any imminent conflict or danger to world peace. A divided Europe could develop instability and uncertainty.

In the current prevailing scenario, the EU stands tall as far as fundamental human rights are concerned. Moreover, the EU is seen as a beacon of freedom of religion, conscious and expression.

European leaders need to bridge the gap between people by listening and addressing their concerns, by highlighting the importance of a united Europe, and by adopting just, fair and policies for the common good. They should adopt cohesive, practical and effective policies. In essence, member states should seek to cooperate with one another so that division is replaced by unity.

If adequate measures are taken then it will soon become apparent that the existing concerns and developing gulf between the EU institutions, member states and citizens, will end and be replaced by peace and mutual respect, provided true justice is practised and each country realises its responsibility.

As far as the issue of irregular migration is concerned, it seems that there is a clear resolve by all member states to counter this problem effectively. The two important summits held in Malta on migration in the span of few months is clear evidence of this resolve.

Every year thousands of lives are lost in attempts to reaching Europe by deserts and sea. This issue should be seen on a larger canvas and the entire region, including European, African and rich Muslim countries need to play their role in saving human lives; and to find permanent and effective solutions to this issue. There is need of a comprehensive and collective operation against human traffickers.

The world powers can assist these unstable countries from where migrants are coming to Europe, in institution building, establishing peace and rule of law, providing sufficient training to their forces in maintaining and securing their borders. Furthermore, assistance needs to be given for the eradication of poverty, hunger, illiteracy of our brothers and sisters.

There is also a need to raise awareness in those countries, with the help of their family members who are living in Europe, about the perils of this journey through desert and sea. It is also essential to raise awareness and to educate people of those under-developed countries, with all the ways and means possible, on how they can stand up on their own two feet. I like this wonderful saying: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”

If there is peace in those countries, it will result in a massive decline in migration. However, as a short-term solution, the United Nations [UNHCR] has opened its offices in some countries, such as Libya and Tunis, where these migrants should be given the opportunity to submit their applications and requests for asylum.

The European Union must face all challenges with complete unity and strength. If Europe remains united in every situation and preserves its unique qualities and principles of justice, freedom and human rights, the future of Europe will certainly be very bright. Original Post:

Why more people turn to drugs?

From the Archives: Source/Credit: The Times of Malta, Wednesday, October 6, 2010, by Laiq Ahmed Atif

In the contemporary world, man, as a whole, has reached a high standard of achievement in material progress. Human society, no doubt, is benefiting from the fruits of today’s scientific progress. The rays of this progress have reached far and enlightened the darkest areas of the world. Nevertheless, man is not happy and content. Moreover, the world of today is riddled with a large number of problems.

Drug misuse is a massive problem facing the world today. Children are losing their lives, dreams and future to drugs. Countless homes have been wrecked and drug-related crimes are destroying families and ruining the social fabric of communities.

A recent study in the UK shows that parents worry more about their children taking drugs than possessing knives or guns. Four in 10 parents said drug use is their biggest fear for their youngsters, 10 times as many as those who say they are concerned about their children carrying weapons (4.7 per cent).

Governments are spending big amounts of money in tackling drug misuse and fighting the war on drugs.

But, they do not seem to be winning this fighting because, worryingly, the number of people turning to drugs is dramatically rising. The fact is that the demand for illicit drugs has risen and is rising sharply. More and more people than ever before are taking drugs.

The question arises: Why are people increasingly turning to drugs?

According to various drug-related studies, people normally take drugs for one of the following reasons: deprivation and unemployment, emotional and physical abuse, trauma, pain, stress, boredom, peer pressure, curiosity, wanting to experiment with something new, addiction and the easy availability and cheap price of certain drugs. And the prevailing economic depression is another contributory factor for more people to turn to drugs and gambling and, thus, lead to further crime in society.

While the above explanations may all be valid, what they illustrate is that many people use drugs because there is a void in their lives. A person encountering problems, stress, trauma or even abuse in life turns to drugs as a type of escape boat, something to remove one’s anxieties and depression.

Drugs provide a kind of temporary life raft, a relaxing and pleasurable “trip” to run away from the harsh realities of life. In times of need, a person may turn to drugs as a remedy for one’s ailments.

But, in reality, all the above reasons in favour of drugs are like a mirage in a desert, where the thirsty one thinks there is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it to be just an illusion. Drug addicts also think that drugs could quench their thirst but drugs are no more than a mirage in a desert.

If we ponder over the problem, we find that man is lacking trust and faith in God and when there is no trust in God then man tries to find relaxation through the drugs. Unfortunately, the reality is that, even in drugs, man does not find either solace or satisfaction.

What leads one to be happy and to find satisfaction and lasting peace of mind?

The Almighty God says: Aye! It is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts can find comfort. Oh, you the restless society, oh, you the restless world know for certain that true tranquillity, true peace of mind is in the remembrance of God and is in the relationship with God.

This is a great and extremely natural truth. The more the people of the world seek the paltry goods of this life, the greater becomes the hunger and the consequent burning of their hearts.

But those who seek God, the more they turn to Him, the greater is their peace of mind. This shows that the search for God is the innermost yearning of human nature and the real goal of man’s life. When that goal is attained man begins to enjoy perfect peace of mind for then he rests, as it were, in the very lap of the all knowing and all powerful God, maker and controller of the universe. If only the people of the world would realise this great secret of happiness!

Drug addiction does not only ruin someone’s life but it also ruins children, families and societies. And, moreover, it becomes a social and international crime, which disrupts all society.

Drugs cause hatred and enmity among people, leading to murder, violence, immoral behaviour etc. and, finally, pushing man away from the Creator.

Drugs cause mental and physical damage, are the cause of many crimes and lead to addiction and serious health issues.

Instead, one ought to establish a close relationship with God, ask for His mercy, seek His help to fulfil every desire and look for inspiration from Him alone. God, the Creator of the universe and everything in it, can surely remove all the depression, misery and suffering.

May God save the world from the threat of the misuse of drugs and may the world become a place of lasting peace. Read original article in The Times of Malta:

Celebrating festivals with society

img_0004The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta in collaboration with the Gzira Local Council celebrated the festive season together with the local community including elderly, people with special needs and children from Gzira St Clare Primary School, on 9th December 2016.

The Mayor of Gzira, Mr. Conrad Borg Manche’ and Laiq Ahmed Atif, President Ahmadiyya Community Malta, together presented gift hampers to those attended the event.

The Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community always emphasised on serving and showing compassion to fellow human beings. He writes:

“That religion is no religion that does not inculcate sympathy, nor does that man deserve to be called a man who does not have sympathy in him… If you are an elder, be kind to the younger ones and do not belittle them. If you are rich, serve the poor but do not treat them with pride and disdain. If you wish God to be pleased with you, then be like two brothers born of one mother.”

“The principle to which we adhere is that we have kindness at heart for the whole of mankind. If anyone sees the house of a Hindu neighbour on fire and does not come forward to help extinguish the fire, most truly I declare that he does not belong to me. If anyone of my followers, having seen someone attempting to murder a Christian does not endeavour to save him, I most truly declare that he does not belong to us.… I love mankind with the love that a compassionate mother has for her children; even more so.” FIND MORE:

Nagħmlu l-festi memorabbli!

il-festiSource/Credit: It-Torca, Sunday December 18, 2016. By Laiq Ahmed Atif

(Il-Koran, 46:16)

Sidek amar, “Taduraw lil ħadd Ħliefu, u uru tjieba lejn il-ġenituri. Jekk xi ħadd minnhom, jew it-tnejn li huma, jixjieħu miegħek, qatt tgħidilhom kliem iebes jew ta’ stmerrija, iżda indirizzahom bil-ħlewwa. U b’umiltà u tenerezza itlob: “Sidi, ħenn għalihom bħalma rabbewni meta kont żgħir.” (Il-Koran, 17:24-25)

Ejjew niċċelebraw dawn il-mumenti tal-ferħ mal-anzjani, mal-ġenituri u ma’ dawk li jħossu solitudni. Dan huwa verament għemil nobbli u ġust. Bla dubju ta’ xejn, nista’ ngħid li meta xi ħadd jiċċelebra ma’ dawk il-persuni, il-ferħ u s-sodisfazzjoni li jħoss huwa inkredibbli, u ma tistax tispjegah fi kliem. Għalhekk,  jekk irridu li Alla jifraħ magħna, ejjew nirbħu l-qlub tal-poplu ta’ Alla u niċċelebraw dawn il-festi magħhom.

Muslims express extreme love for Jesus and Mother Mary

The world is full of life and human beings are the best of creation. It is also natural that every life will end one day as the Holy Quran very rightly mentions:

Every soul shall taste of death. (Al Quran 3:186)

But some people remain alive after their death and they live in the hearts of millions of people for thousands of years; they rule on minds and hearts’ of millions of people. The world had seen such influential and remarkable people throughout the human history, but some left unforgettable, impressive and extraordinary remarks on the hearts and memories of people.

Moses, Buddha, Krishna, Jesus and Mohammad (peace be upon them all) were among the most influential and extraordinary people of the human history. They gave so much, through out their lives, for the good of mankind.

With the start of December, every year, streets and homes are decorated with colorful lights and designs, and everywhere you can see the colors and trees of Christmas.

Many Companies prepare year long for shopping spree during the holidays.  With celebrations in the air, People rush to markets in December, for their shopping, to select gifts for their family, friends and loved ones. Markets become filled with people and public is offered with variety of goods to shop.

During Christmas time, many people ask, do Muslims celebrate Christmas?

The simple answer, which almost every Muslim tries to give, is that, Muslims do not celebrate Christmas like Christians do.

However, Muslims do cherish the message, and benefit from the teachings and character of the Jesus Christ, may peace be on him. And Muslims hold great love, respect and honor not only for Jesus but also for his mother, remembering mother Mary as a role model for them, as described in the Holy Quran.

Jesus in the Holy Quran:

One can assess the importance of this by the fact that the Holy Quran, the Divine Book for the Muslims, has mentioned the name of Jesus Christ nearly 25 times and also mentioned his mother the Holy Mary for couple of times, in different chapters of the Holy Quran. The Quran makes it obligatory for the Muslims to believe in all the prophets and messengers of God, including Jesus.

There is no denying the fact that the Holy Quran makes it incumbent on every Muslim to believe in all the prophets, but as Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, the IV Caliph of the Promised Messiah, peace be with him, beautifully says:

When he speaks of Jesus Christ or Moses or Krishna or Buddha with veneration and love, he does so because he has no other option. It is a part of the fundamental article of his faith to extend not just a human courtesy, but to genuinely believe in their truth and honor. In the light of this, this article of faith appears to hold an importance of global scale. It establishes inter- religious peace and harmony and genuinely creates an atmosphere of mutual trust and love. Like the Unity of God it holds the intrinsic quality of being irreplaceable — there is no alternative.  (An Elementary Study of Islam, P: 23)

The Holy Quran states:

Say ye: ‘We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Abraham and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob and his children, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given to all other Prophets from their Lord. We make no difference between any of them; and to Him we submit ourselves.’ (Al Quran 2:137)

And We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs and strengthened him with the Spirit of holiness.  (Al Quran 2:254 / 2:88)

When the angels said, ‘O Mary, Allah gives thee glad tidings of a word from Him; his name shall be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, honored in this world and in the next, and of those who are granted nearness to God;   ‘And he shall speak to the people in the cradle and when of middle age, and he shall be of the righteous.’ (Al Quran 3:46-47)

Mother Mary in the Holy Quran:

The Holy Quran extended great honor and respect to Mary, to such a high extent that God has named an entire chapter of the Holy Quran by her name, ‘Sura Maryam’, and Maryam is an Arabic name for Mary. The Holy Quran has given a great status to Mary and refutes all the charges raised against her, and says that the mother of Jesus was righteous woman and that Satan had no share in his birth. The Holy Quran states:

And remember when the angels said, ‘O Mary, Allah has chosen thee and purified thee and chosen thee above the women of all peoples.’ (Al Quran  3:43)

And his mother was a truthful woman. (Al Quran 5:76)

The Holy Quran bears constant testimony about chastity and noble character of mother Mary and condemns the Jews, when they accuse mother Mary:

And because of their (Jews) disbelief and their uttering against Mary a grievous calumny. (Al Quran 4:157)

Furthermore, the Holy Quran pays such great tribute to Mary, that it gives two examples for the Muslim believers, both men and women, as role model, wife of Pharaoh and mother Mary – the mother of Jesus. The Holy Quran says:

And Allah sets forth for those who believe the example of the wife of Pharaoh when she said, ‘My Lord! Build for me a house with Thee in the Garden; and deliver me from Pharaoh and his work, and deliver me from the wrongdoing people;’ And the example of Mary, the daughter of ‘Imran, who guarded her private parts — so We breathed into him (Jesus) of Our Spirit — and she fulfilled in her person the words of her Lord and His Books and was one of the obedient. (Al Quran 66:12-13)

Mary, the mother of Jesus, represents those righteous servants and believers of God, Muslims, who having given up all sin and having made peace with God, are blessed with Divine inspiration.

I believe that, this is a true manifestation of love with Jesus and Mary to exhibit through our deeds the noble character and example they have set forth for us, and to live a pure, pious, righteous and virtuous life, striving in the way of God the Almighty.

We hold great respect and affection for Jesus and Marry in our hearts. We wish “Merry Christmas” to all our Christian brothers and sisters.

Additionally, we wish a wonderful year of 2017, full of blessings, peace, prosperity, health and happiness;  and of peace and blessings of Allah, for the entire humanity. Amen

Are Muslims friends to other faiths?

are-muslims-friends-to-other-faiths

Source/credit: The Times of Malta, Saturday, November 19, 2016, by: Laiq Ahmed Atif

“O ye who believe, take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. And whoso among you takes them for friends is indeed one of them. Verily, Allah guides not the unjust people.” (Quran, 5:52)

This verse of the Quran is often quoted to show that Islam is an intolerant religion and commands its followers not to befriend Jews, Christians and people of other faiths. In many countries, Islam is blamed, while quoting this verse, for being resistant towards integration and inclusion.

The Quran is a complete book of guidance and profound wisdom. However, to ascertain the complete guidance and true message, it is highly important to keep the context and the entire teachings in view.

It should never be forgotten that some parts of the Quran explain other parts; they are like a commentary on those parts. Something mentioned briefly in one chapter is further explained in a different chapter, with the context in view. A complete understanding can only be achieved by understanding the whole issue as presented over all the verses and chapters and not just by looking at only one part or verse.

I think the biggest misconception among people is that this verse refers to Christians and Jews of all times. However, if we look at the context of the verse, we see that it refers to the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad, when Jews and Christians were at war with Muslims. Even so, the subsequent verse 58 clarifies the reasons for discouraging friendships with Jews and Christians of that time, who used to make fun of Muslims for adhering to their faith. It states: “O ye who believe! Take not those for friends who make a jest and sport of your religion” (5:58).

In this context, there were many attempts made by the opponents of Islam to lead away Muslims from their path and impose on them their teachings and change them accordingly. So this was the situation where extreme caution was needed to provide a safeguard from the attacks of opponents and their planted conspiracies against Islam and Muslims.

Such precautions are always taken for the security and welfare of people whenever there is any war or conflict, and today’s modern world is no exception. This is what is prohibited. But to treat anyone kindly, with compassion and sympathy, is not only permitted but is imperative on Muslims. The Quran further explains this issue and states:

“Allah forbids you not, respecting those who have not fought against you on account of your religion, and who have not driven you forth from your homes, that you be kind to them and act equitably towards them. Allah only forbids you, respecting those who have fought against you on account of your religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and have helped others in driving you out.” (60:9-10)

This is the beauty of the Quran, that it speaks a language which is amazingly clear and applicable to all possible situations. It provides reasons and logic with every commandment and injunction.

The Prophet Muhammad is mentioned in the Quran as “a mercy for all mankind” (21:108), and Jews and Christians are part of mankind. So how could Muslims be restricted by the Quran from showing mercy, kindness, sympathy and friendship to them?

Moreover, the life and character of the Prophet Muhammad is an embodiment of kindness and beneficence towards all mankind. The Prophet, as a matter of habit, used to visit the ailing non-Muslims to express sympathy with them and to share their sorrows and sufferings. During his life, he always tried to help those in need.

When the Prophet Muhammad migrated to Medina, he signed a charter with Jews and Christians to live with mutual sympathy and sincerity, that they would refrain from oppression against each other. The Prophet Muhammad also granted a charter of freedom and kindness to St Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai in 628.

The message of Islam is of tolerance, harmony, peace, brotherhood, kindness and friendship. And any wrongly or out-of-context quoted or misinterpreted verses of the Quran should not be used as a tool of hatred or to inflict fear in the minds and hearts of people.

In brief, it is the duty of Muslims to become friends and show compassion, sympathy and kindness towards all peaceful human beings, without any exception or discrimination.

The motto of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community ‘Love for all, hatred for none’ is in fact, an essence of the Islamic teachings.

Domestic Violence

IL-VJOLENZA DOMESTIKA

Source/Credit: IT-TORĊA, Il-Ħadd 13 ta’ Novembru 2016. Kitba ta: Laiq Ahmed Atif, President Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta, amjmalta@gmail.com

Il-vjolenza domestika hija imġiba li wieħed juża sabiex jieħu kontroll jew saħħa fuq il-partner tiegħu. Dan junkludi kull forma ta’ vjolenza fiżika jew theddida għall-vjolenza fiżika, kif ukoll l-abbuż finanzjarju, emozzjonali jew mentali li jiġu użati biex wieħed jikseb kontroll fuq in-naħa l-oħra taż-żwieġ tiegħu.

Din hija sfortuna kbira li kważi 90% vittmi tal-vjolenza domestika huma nisa. Meta xi ħadd jaqra l-fatti u ċ-ċifri dwar il-vjolenza fuq in-nisa, jirrealizza li huma xokkanti ħafna. Skont l-istatistiċi tal-Ġnus Magħquda, waħda minn kull tliet nisa jesperjenzaw il-vjolenza fiżika jew sesswali, li ħafna drabi tiġi minn sieħeb intimu.

Is-sitwazzjoni f’pajjiżna mhijiex differenti ħafna. Skont informazzjoni ppreżentata fil-Parlament, fl-ewwel 8 xhur ta’ din is-sena kien hemm total ta’ 845 persuna li ġew imressaqa l-Qorti fuq reati ta’ vjolenza domestika. Minn dawn il-persuni, 571 kienu rġiel u 274 mara. Dawn iċ-ċifri xokkanti jqajmu dibattitu kontroversjali u ħafna mistoqsijiet.

Għalhekk, naħseb li huwa importanti li dan is-suġġett jiġi diskuss għaliex għadna qed nesperjenzaw ħafna każijiet tal-vjolenza domestika, u għaldaqstant irridu naraw kif nistgħu nevitawhom milli jseħħu.

Sabiex nevitaw dawn l-inċidenti sfortunati huwa kruċjali li nibdew naħdmu llum qabel għada, u minn djarna stess. Huwa importanti li l-mġiba tal-ġenituri għandha tkun iffukata fuq l-imħabba u r-rispett enormi bejn il-koppji sabiex uliedhom jitgħallmu minn età żgħira kemm ir-rispett huwa kruċjali għal relazzjoni u għas-saħħa tal-familja.

Dejjem ngħid u nibqa’ ngħid li t-tfal jew iż-żgħażagħ tal-lum huma l-mexxejja ta’ għada. Il-futur sod tan-nazzjon jitlob li nikkultivaw il-kwalitajiet tajba fi wliedna. Għalhekk jekk irridu nevitaw din il-vjolenza domestika mid-djar tagħna, għandna l-ħtieġa nistabbilixxu l-atmosfera tal-imħabba u tar-rispett enormi fil-familja.

It-tieni nett, il-ġenituri għandhom imexxu bl-eżempju, u fl-istess ħin għandhom ukoll jgħallmu lil uliedhom jipprattikaw dawn il-valuri fl-iskejjel u mal-ħbieb tagħhom u minn età żgħira jitgħallmu dawn il-valuri u l-prinċipji u jipprattikawhom fil-ħajja ta’ kuljum.

Ħafna drabi dawk it-tfal subien li raw il-vjolenza fit-tfulija tagħhom, jew dawk is-subien li trabbew f’ambjent tens, magħfus u ppressat bil-vjolenza, meta jikbru jużaw il-vjolenza huma wkoll. Għax, il-vjolenza tkun daħlet ġo ħajjithom mill-bidu nett issir parti minnhom u ma jkunux jistgħu jinfirdu minnha.

Għalhekk, l-Iżlam jenfasizza ħafna dwar it-trattament xierqa u ħanin lejn il-mara f’kull irwol tagħha, bħala omm, mara, oħt jew bint. Meta t-tfal jikbru f’ambjent ta’ rispett u jaraw li l-missier jittratta lil ommu, lil martu, lil oħtu u lil bintu bir-rispett, l-imħabba u l-kumpassjoni, ma jkunx hemm raġuni li niddubitaw li meta jikber se juri r-rispett lejn il-mara.

Huwa wkoll ta’ importanza kbira li nifhmu li r-raġel u l-mara huma ekwi u ugwali u ħadd ma għandu jħoss l-ebda superjorità. In-nisa mhumiex inferjuri għall-irġiel imma huma ugwali mal-irġiel. “In-nisa għandhom drittijiet simli u ugwali għal dwak tal-irġiel fl-ekwità” (Il-Koran, 2:229).

Ħafna drabi dawn l-inċidenti jseħħu minħabba n-nuqqas ta’ sabar u minħabba li wieħed dejjem jara l-iżbalji tal-ieħor. Il-Koran Imqaddes jgħallem lill-irġiel biex juru ħniena lejn in-nisa u jgħid: “Ġibu ruħkom man-nisa bi tjieba; u jekk tobogħduhom, jista’ jkun li tobogħdu xi ħaġa li Alla qiegħed fiha ġid kbir” (Il-Koran, 4:20).

Finalment, naħseb li d-djalogu bejn il-koppja huwa strumentali fil-ġlieda kontra l-vjolenza domestika. U kull meta xi differenza tinqala’ bejniethom, għandhom ippoġġu madwar il-mejda u jiddiskutu u jsibu s-soluzzjonijiet. In-nuqqas ta’ diskussjoni wkoll xi drabi jieħu forma ta’ vjolenza. Mingħajr dubju ta’ xejn, l-għarfien u l-edukazzjoni huma wkoll pilastri importanti għal soċjetà paċifika u tolleranti f’dinja fejn kollox huwa mgħaġġel minħabba l-ħakma teknoloġika.

Ahmadiyya Head makes historic address at Canada’s National Parliament

  • Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad delivers address calling for equality and justice
  • The Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community welcomed to Canada by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
  • Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad officially recognised during Question Period in House of Commons
  • Dozens of Ministers, Senators, MPs and policy makers receive Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad in Parliament
  • His Holiness presents Louise Arbour with Sir Zafrullah Khan Award for Public Service

On 17 October 2016, the World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the Fifth Khalifa (Caliph), His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad was welcomed to Canada’s Houses of Parliament by Prime Minister, Rt Hon. Justin Trudeau, Cabinet Ministers and over 50 MPs and Senators.

Later in the day, His Holiness delivered an historic keynote address entitled

“Human values – the foundation for a peaceful world”

to an audience of more than 225 people at a special reception held at the Sir John A. Macdonald Building at the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa.

More than 110 guests attended, including over 50 Members of Parliament. The event was also attended by a number of Government Ministers including Hon. Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and the official representative of the Prime Minister and Hon. John McCallum, Minister for Integration, Refugees and Citizenship.

Also in attendance were Senators, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, including 11 Ambassadors of State, media representatives, academics, NGO leaders, religious leaders and prominent figures from various other sectors of society.

During his keynote address, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad addressed various issues of global importance, including the risk of a global war, religious freedom, increasing radicalisation and extremism and international relations.

His Holiness called on the world’s governments to display true justice and equity in all matters. His Holiness also presented Islamic teachings and offered solutions to the world’s problems based on the teachings of the Holy Quran.

Reflecting upon the need for unity in society, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“Irrespective of differences of background, I believe that on the basis of humanity, we are all joined together, and should therefore be united. All people and all organisations, must collectively endeavour to uphold human values, and strive to make the world in which we live, a better and far more harmonious place.”

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued:

“If human values and human rights are not upheld in one country or region, it has a knock-on effect upon other parts of the world and such wrongdoing can spread further afield. Conversely, if there is goodness, humanity and prosperity in one part of the world, it will have a positive effect on other societies and other people.”

Speaking about the increasing conflict in the world, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“As a result of modern forms of communication and transport, we are all now much closer together and are no longer confined or bound by geography. Yet, it is a strange and tragic paradox that even though we are more connected than ever before, we are actually growing more distant by the day. It is extremely regrettable, and a source of grief, that instead of uniting and spreading love amongst mankind, the world has paid far greater heed towards spreading hatred, cruelty and injustice.”

His Holiness admitted that fear of Islam was growing in much of the world. However, he said that fear of the religion itself was completely unnecessary.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“Let me reassure all of you that Islam is not what you commonly see or hear portrayed in the media. As far as my knowledge of Islam is concerned, I only know of that Islam whose teachings are based on its name. The literal meaning of the word ‘Islam’ is peace, love, and harmony and all of its teachings are based upon these noble values.”

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued:

“Unfortunately, it cannot be denied that there are some Muslim groups, whose beliefs and actions are in total contrast to Islam’s teachings. In complete violation of Islam’s fundamental teachings, they are perpetrating the most horrific violence and terrorism in its name.”

His Holiness said that universal religious freedom was a pre-requisite for any successful and tolerant society.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“The Holy Quran categorically states in chapter 2, verse 257 that ‘there should be no compulsion in religion.’ What a clear, comprehensive and unequivocal statement that enshrines freedom of thought, freedom of religion and freedom of conscience. Thus, my belief and my teaching, is that every person, in every village, town, city or country has the undisputed right to choose his or her religion and to practice it.”

His Holiness said it was a cause of regret that governments in the Muslim world and also some Western Governments had sought to restrict the religious rights of some communities within their nations.

His Holiness said that any attempt to curb religious freedom was dangerous.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“Every individual has the right to peacefully preach and propagate his or her teaching to others. These freedoms ought to be guaranteed as basic human rights, and so legislative assemblies or governments should not unduly involve themselves in such matters.”

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued:

“It is not wise for governments or parliaments to place restrictions on the basic religious practices or beliefs of people. For example, governments should not concern themselves with what type of clothing a woman chooses to wear. They should not issue decrees stating what a place of worship should look like. If they overreach in this way, it will be a means of restlessness and heightening frustrations amongst their people. Such grievances will continue to exacerbate if they are not checked and ultimately will threaten the peace of society.”

Speaking about the role of Government according to Islamic teachings, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“It is the task of the government and parliamentarians, as guardians of their nations, to legislate in a way that gives rights to their citizens rather than takes their rights away.”

His Holiness said that though religious freedom was a principle of vital importance, wherever there was a risk of extremism or incitement to hatred, it was the task of Governments to intervene and take firm action in order to protect their people. His Holiness also spoke of the need for justice both in domestic affairs and international relations.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“To be handed the keys to government is a huge trust and so we often see heads of state pledge to serve their nations faithfully and with absolute justice. Sadly, in many cases such honourable pledges prove to be hollow words.”

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued:

“In some countries, there are dictatorships or unjust governments, yet the major powers turn a blind eye to their cruelties, because those governments happen to support them and facilitate the procurement of their interests. Yet, in countries where the leaders or governments do not bend to the whim of the major powers, they are quite happy to support rebel elements or to demand regime change. In truth, there is no difference in the way the respective governments are treating their own people. The material difference is only that in some cases the governments cooperate with the major powers, whilst in others they do not.”

His Holiness criticised certain Governments for selling weapons to some Muslim nations

“without considering the potential consequences”.

He said such weapons often end up in the wrong hands or are used in order to kill innocent civilians.

Citing Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen as a prime example of injustice and reflecting upon its potential consequences, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“It is well known that Saudi Arabia is using weapons purchased from the West in its war in Yemen, in which thousands of innocent civilians, including women and children, are being killed and so much destruction is being wrought. What will be the ultimate result of such arms trading? The people of Yemen, whose lives and futures are being destroyed, will not only bear hatred and seek revenge from Saudi Arabia but will also bear hate towards Saudi’s arms suppliers and the West in general.”

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued:

“With no hope or future prospects left, and having witnessed the most horrific brutality, members of their youth will be prone to radicalisation and in this way a new vicious cycle of terrorism and extremism will arise. Are such destructive and devastating consequences worth a few billion dollars?”

His Holiness also said that international institutions such as the United Nations needed to ensure fairness and equity between members states.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“If only the major powers and the international institutions, such as the United Nations, had truly acted upon their founding principles, under all circumstances, then we would not have seen the toxic plague of terrorism infect so many parts of the world. We would not have seen the world’s peace and security repeatedly undermined and destroyed. And we certainly would not have witnessed the huge refugee crisis, which now confounds and frightens the people of Europe and other developed countries.”

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued:

“The United Nations must also play its role in establishing peace in the world, unencumbered by politics, injustice or favouritism.”

Concluding, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“I hope and pray that Allah the Almighty enables the United Nations and the world’s governments to act in this way so that true and long-lasting peace may be established. The alternative does not bear thinking about, because if we continue as we are then the world is charging madly towards a huge catastrophe in the shape of another world war.”

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad continued:

“May Allah grant wisdom to the world’s leaders and policy makers so that the world we leave behind for our children and future generations is a world of peace and prosperity.”

During the event, His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad presented Hon. Louise Arbour, the former High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations and a former Canadian Supreme Court Judge with the Sir Zafrullah Khan Award for Public Service. This award recognised her outstanding public service during her long and distinguished career.

Upon receipt of the award, Hon. Louise Arbour said:

“I am deeply honoured to receive this very prestigious award that is named after a great jurist, lawyer, judge and a great diplomat. I am particularly honoured to be associated with Sir Zafrullah Khan, as he was a Chief Judge and President of the International Court of Justice… I have also always been deeply impressed by the promotion of the culture of peace that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has stood for and continues to stand for.”

A number of guest speakers also took to the stage.

Hon. Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and official representative of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said:

“It is an honour and privilege to be here tonight to welcome His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Fifth Caliph and leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community to Parliament Hill. All of Parliament Hill has come together today to join His Holiness, to celebrate with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and to demonstrate our strong support… The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community makes an enormous difference here in Canada and always demonstrates Love for All, Hatred for None.”

Dr. James J. Zogby, Vice-Chair of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom said:

“Your Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, on behalf of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom I am honoured to be with you tonight. What has always impressed us about the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is how, despite being all too often victims of persecution, you remain champions for the rights of others who are being persecuted. In a world where intolerance seems to be increasing the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community remains a strong advocate of tolerance and goodwill.”

Earlier in the day, His Holiness held a range of meetings with Federal Ministers of Canada’s Government, Senators and MPs. His Holiness also held a meeting with Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau.

The Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was also officially recognised by theSpeaker of Parliament during a session of Question Period, in which all present members of the House of Commons, including the Prime Minister, stood and gave His Holiness a standing ovation.

Further, Hon. Judy Sgro MP, read out a Members Statement in the House of Commons that stated:

“Mr. Speaker, earlier today the global spiritual leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community arrived in Ottawa for a formal visit to Parliament Hill.

During his time with us, he will meet with Cabinet Ministers, Senators, Members of Parliament, and the Prime Minister in an effort to further underscore his peaceful message of love for all and hatred for none.

This work is part of an ongoing effort undertaken by His Holiness to showcase the peaceful nature and beauty of the faith (of Islam) and while calling on global powers to advance an agenda of peace, religious freedom, and the advancement of human rights in Canada and around the world.

I applaud His Holiness and members of the global Ahmadiyya faith for their work, and I extend a hand of friendship on behalf of my constituents and the people of Canada.”

The special reception concluded with a silent prayer led by Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad. Following dinner Parliamentarians and guests were able to meet personally with His Holiness.

Prime Minister of Canada receives Head of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Ottawa

Prime Minister Trudeau welcomes Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad to Ottawa

On 17 October 2016, the World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, the Fifth Khalifa (Caliph), His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad was received by thePrime Minister of Canada, Rt Hon, Justin Trudeau at the Prime Minister’s Office in Ottawa.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his pleasure at welcoming His Holiness to Canada.

The Prime Minister thanked His Holiness for his continued efforts to promote peace worldwide and stated that his Government greatly appreciated the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Canada and considered it to be an integral part of the nation.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad thanked the Prime Minister for his words and said that he wished to personally congratulate the Prime Minister on his election last year.

His Holiness also said that he had listened to Question Period in the House of Commons earlier in the day and he had noted that a number of the “burning issues of today” had been discussed and debated.

Later, Prime Minister Trudeau said:

“Your Holiness, your friendship and leadership is very important to Canada and we appreciate the way the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community condemns all forms of extremism.”

Thereafter, His Holiness attended a meeting with the Prime Minister and 6 Federal Ministers. In the meeting, the Prime Minister again appreciated the efforts of Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad to spread peace in the world. The Prime Minister also congratulated the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Canada on its 50th anniversary.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad recalled his previous meeting with the Prime Minister in 2012, which took place in Peace Village. At the time, Mr Trudeau was not leader of the Liberal Party.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“When I first met you in 2012 I prayed for you and said that I believed that one day you will be Prime Minister.”

Further discussions then took place about the need for inter-faith dialogue amongst different communities, the importance of education for all people and of religious freedom.

Regarding religious freedom, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“All people should be granted true religious freedom and all people should have the right to peacefully practice their faiths and beliefs. Governments should not seek to interfere or legislate against peacefully held religious beliefs.”

His Holiness expressed his concerns about the continued rise of extremism and terrorism in different parts of the world and the associated risks in the Western world. He said that he considered the 2008 global financial crash to be a major cause of the terrorism witnessed in the world today.

His Holiness said high unemployment and a state of financial desperation and hopelessness had led certain Muslim youths to becoming vulnerable to extremism. Thus, he said that providing job opportunities and helping people stand upon their own feet was a means of ensuring national security.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad reiterated that all forms of terrorism and extremism were not linked to Islam.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:

“If all Muslims followed the true teachings of their religion then no Muslim would ever be radicalised because the Founder of Islam, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that to love one’s nation was a part of Islamic faith. Thus, it is the duty of every Muslim to love his nation, to strive for its betterment and to serve it faithfully. That is why Ahmadi Muslims do not get radicalised because we follow the true teachings of Islam.”

Is religion the cause of unrest?

Source/Credit: The Malta Independent on Sunday: by Laiq Ahmed Atif, Sunday, 16 October 2016.

The lava of hatred erupts against religion from time to time. Today much of the world considers religion to be of secondary importance and believes that to progress there is a need to step away from religious beliefs and practices. In fact, increasingly, people living in developed nations now view religion as the root cause of the conflict and disorder that we see in the world.

Today the world has become a global village and the presences of different religions, cultures and races are seen across the globe. Some critics of religion express their easiness and are comfortable with the presence of diverse cultures and races, but, when it comes to religion it is labelled for creating division between people. Some criticize and blame religion for being narrow minded, decayed, outdated, and that it resists integration and inclusion. The religion is also seen as the grave threat to the world peace. Some think that religion has done a little good but the loss and damage done by religion is huge and massive. Thus they argue that religion in today’s enlightened era serves no purpose.

I think all such arguments are not based on justice and fairness. In fact, religion is the path that takes human beings to their ultimate destination – reformation, success, satisfaction and peace. It is also a fact that human beings learnt basic morals, values and virtues through religion.

Religion does not cause division, instead promotes unity and brotherhood. Religion does not kill; it only warns and admonishes people that they must establish peace and security.

Its every injunction is laced with sentiments of love and compassion for all mankind. The Quran has informed us that every Prophet brought the same message, which is that cruelty, injustice, oppression and persecution should be eliminated. The Prophets admonished people to instead adopt love and sympathy for one another, or otherwise face God’s punishment. God says in the Quran that He is slow to punish people and is not hasty in unfurling His wrath. Even when punishment is mete out, it is for the purpose of bringing about reformation.

Was religion the cause of either of the two world wars that took place in the 20th Century? Or were those abhorrent wars based upon a desire for power, conquering lands, geo-political gains and greed?

The number of people suffered, injured and died in these two world wars is extremely horrific. Over 60 million people died in World War II alone. Moreover, in Hiroshima and Nagasaki the sufferings and effects of war are being felt to this very day, even after seven long decades.

I think it is a grave injustice to blame religion for the disorder in the land. I believe that the cause of prevailing unrest is because people have abandoned faith and are moving away from God Almighty.

Peace cannot be attained without adhering to the teachings of the true religion. Do the books of the prophets, for example the Torah or the Bible, advocate war and strife? The Bible goes as far as to exhort its followers to ‘turn the other cheek’. And then there are the holy teachings of the Quran with which no culture or political system can compete. As an example, only one verse of the Holy Quran is presented:

“Verily, Allah enjoins justice, and the doing of good to others; and giving like kindred; and forbids indecency and manifest evil and transgression.” (Ch.16:V.91)

If the admonitions in the above verse are heeded, every country and every nation would know nothing but peace. Allah exhorts us to:

  1. Abide by justice;
  2. Be benevolent;
  3. Show compassion to others as though they were our kith and kin;
  4. Refrain from, and admonish others to refrain from such vices as can be harmful and are known as blatant evil;
  5. Not transgress against good, beneficent, peace-loving governments and to exhort others likewise.

In other words we should be just, benevolent and compassionate; we should avoid indecency, blatant evil and transgression and we should save others from falling prey to these evils. These are the six basic commandments for the establishment of peace. If these six do’s and do not’s were put into practice, every country and every nation would see nothing but peace.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the Supreme Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Communityexplained clearly the purpose of religion saying:

“The purpose of religion is to create a bond of love between God and mankind. It is to remove all prejudice and hatred. It is to establish the very highest standards of morality and justice. Religion is the name of that institution which creates a loving union between man and His Creator and inculcates sympathy and compassion between all people.”
