Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta Participates in “Malta’s Sustainable Development Action Days 2026: From Ideas To Impact!”
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat Malta, in collaboration with the Gżira Local Council, actively participated in Malta’s Sustainable Development Action Days 2026 by organising a community event at the Gżira Local Council Hall, contributing to the wider objectives of the European Sustainable Development Week 2026.
The event was opened by the Mayor of Gżira, who highlighted the Council’s initiatives to promote care and empathy within the community while protecting and improving the local environment. He also spoke warmly of the friendship and cooperation between the Gżira Local Council and the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, expressing his hope for many more collaborative initiatives in the future.
Faisal Mohammed Zakari, a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and a Sustainability Researcher and Analyst, delivered a detailed presentation on some of the key environmental and social challenges facing communities today. He provided an overview of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and explored practical ways in which individuals and communities can contribute towards achieving them.
A moderated panel discussion, led by Musawar Ahmad, brought together the Mayor of Gżira, Mr Bryan Corlett; Rev. Mark Ciantar OFM; and Imam Laiq Ahmed Atif. The discussion explored how faith communities, social organisations and local councils can help educate their communities and the wider public about their environmental and social duties and responsibilities.
The event concluded with participants making personal pledges and reflecting on key takeaways and practical lessons from the discussions. This was followed by a community lunch, providing an opportunity for participants to continue their conversations and strengthen connections in an informal setting.
The event brought together people from different faiths, backgrounds and organisations to reflect on their shared responsibility towards the environment, their neighbours and the wider community. It provided an opportunity for participants to learn from one another and consider how faith, cooperation and shared human values can inspire positive action. The event was proposed as part of Malta’s Sustainable Development Action Days 2026 and contributed to the broader objectives of the European Sustainable Development Week 2026. Through dialogue, education and community engagement, the initiative sought to encourage practical action towards building peaceful, inclusive and sustainable communities.
From Dialogue to Practical Action
The event also highlighted the importance of turning dialogue into practical action, with participants emphasising that meaningful change can begin with simple, practical steps at community level. A number of actions were identified through which communities can work together to strengthen social responsibility, care for the environment, and support those who may be experiencing hardship. These include:
- Raising awareness by educating community members about environmental and social responsibilities.
- Supporting people in need through regular food collections and other community initiatives.
- Promoting sustainable mobility by encouraging walking, cycling, and the use of public transport to reduce carbon emissions, protect the environment, and promote healthier lifestyles.
- Caring for the environment through community clean-up days, tree-planting activities, and community gardening.
- Supporting refugees and people experiencing homelessness through practical assistance, inclusion, and community support.
- Reaching out to those who may be isolated, including elderly residents and others who may benefit from companionship and practical support.
- Supporting people experiencing hardship through joint fundraising activities and other forms of community assistance.
- Making public spaces safer and more welcoming by working together to identify and remove hazards and sources of harm.
- Building bridges across communities by creating opportunities for people of different faiths and backgrounds to meet, learn from one another, and work together in service of the wider community.
